Il mio più bel dono per Natale.

"La storia che sto per raccontarvi comincia come la più bella della favole, una notte di Natale, ed ha per protagonista una principessa, un piccolo dono del Cielo di una leggiadria non comune;

'Cabochon' in tessuto realizzato da Susanna Tesini

A presto

"The story I'm about to tell you begins as the most beautiful of the tales, a Christmas night, and has as its protagonist a princess, a small gift from Heaven of an uncommon grace;

- picture 1 - 'Cabochon' made by Susanna Tesini

she was born in a castle*, on the banks of a lake whose deep waters are colored, in those days, of a blue that almost inebriates, in one of the most spectacular and wild regions of the beautiful Bavaria ... and for about 25 - 30 years of a tale it keeps intact the connotations: the young princess knows her Charming Prince and became married at the age of just 16 years, thus arriving to wear the crown and tiara not just of a queen, but of Empress, Empress of a vast empire, the largest and most powerful of the old continent that already then (in 1853) had 52 million subjects ..... but not always fairy tales have a happy ending and this one begins to undress its fabulosity much, too soon.

But let's go ahead with order, we don't have to accelerate too much the time and let's go back, with our mind, and our heart, to the Holy Night of the year 1837: the stirrings of the small Elisabeth Amalia Eugenia echoed in the large halls of the castle of Possenhofen, and was thus brought to life the third daughter of Princess Ludovica of Bavaria and the Duke Maximilian in Bavaria, who, in the name of pleasure that he drew ascribing family names to his children, will call her simply Lisi or Sisi.

The Victorian period was just beginning, for on June the 20th of that same year,at the age of just 18, in the UK the Little Duchess of Kent Alexandrina Victoria, had risen to the throne and was crowned queen with the name of Victoria, starting a kingdom that remains still today the longest that UK has ever known (she will reign until 1901 for a total of almost 64 years) and starting a kind of innovation in culture and customs that we all know with the name of Victorian age."

After introducing the discourse framing the Victorian period

- picture 5

and trying to present the Queen Victoria, who of this was the involuntary author, as few outside British monarchy knew her,

- picture 6 - Queen Victoria in a photograph depicting her while admires a photo of her beloved

I mean as she appeared in public or, better in her privte life, devoid of that air of authority that often the portrait painters of the time tried to attribute her, with these words, last Sunday afternoon, at the conference of which, for the first time I was rapporteur, I went into the heart of the theme that of this meeting was the inspiring topic, Empress Elisabeth of Austria

- picture 7

and her way of being, without any voluntariness and intentionality, obeying only to the freedom of her spirit, in contrast with her time, with its culture, with the role that history had intended her to 'interpret', with the members of the court and the aristocracy in general of the Vienna of the XIXth century.

- picture 8 - Empress Elisabeth of Austria in a photograph of 1855

The aura of charm and fascination of which she was surrounded by, the innate regality of her manner, her look, his gait, aroused the admiration of everyone who met her while ignoring who she really was, and this Woman, who of the Victorian era was the real actress, not only, the true Protagonist for this way of living her life, above every convention, every conformism, in a time strictly labeled by impositions, deserving the nickname coined by Gabriele d'Annunzio of HEROINE OF DREAMS 1, conquered me from the age of my adolescence ... this regal black swan

- picture 9 - Empress Elizabeth in a photograph of 1865 depicted with one of her beloved dogs, Houseguard

- of the swan she had the moves and the features - elegant and refined, always eager to plow new waters, often dark and perilous, trying to find the way and the place where ease her 'pain of living', not to heal of it but to come to be able and support its weight, often too much, too much heavy.

The rushing horse and the sailing that swells gave her the illusion of the wings. The dew of the meadows knew her, and so the salty sands, and the marine multitudes, and the winds and the rains, and the eagles, and the invisible ways and the fascinating dangers. 2

.... The many deaths that as lightnings not made of light, but rather of darkness, darken her sky (first that of the little Sofia, then that of her only son, heir to the throne, in the tragedy of Mayerling, that of her beloved cousin Ludwig, who lost his life in the waters of the Stanberger See, the loss of her brother-in-law Maximilian, Emperor of Mexico and executed by his people and that of Charlotte, his wife, who lost her life consequently a form of madness generated by this deep grief, and finally that of her sister Sophie Charlotte became a nun and burned alive near Paris during a fire broke out during a charity fair, occured while she was trying to save as many people as she could, which was the last,  the year before her death took her to move away by God to embrace a kind of pantheism, to feel the Sense of the Sacred in the Nature especially in its most immeasurable and boundless expressions  ... the rough of the sea, the wind, the sky, the flight of birds, the immensity of the light ...
To finally arrive to talk about her tragic and sudden demise, which occurred on September 10th, 1898, shortly after 14.30, which seems almost the fulfillment of her will, with no pain, no suffering, when she wasn't too old, yet ...

She died in the hour panic, the hour flamboyant, this creature without sleep, every morning, from a bow or a cape, greeted the dawn with the Iphigenia's words - Nothing is sweeter than to contemplate the light! - She is hit in the act in which she was going ahead towards the shore once more, once more toward the marvelous and comforter water that always attracted her by the promise of opening her deeper visions and to lead her in more hidden cuntries. 3

To prepare a meeting set in the era in which so much I feel I belong to and to talk about thoese characters I love so much, especially to make myself spokesman of the mysterious charm of the beloved Empress that over any other historical figure I do admire

- The rhythm which regulated the magnificent soul mingles with the melody of the world that she listened for so long lying in the grass or in the sand, under the sun and under the stars, feeling the immensity of her grief matchig  the flowing rivers and oceans swaying - 4

was for the best gift that this Christmas could make me .... and I prepared myself spiritually, as first, appealing to what of Victorian always dwells within me, carefully choosing the clothes and the details with which to adorned them

- picture 11

- picture 12

- picture 13

as if I really had received the honor of traveling back in time, in the time in which my heart and my soul reside

- picture 14

... And this trip, ideally, is what I do every time I sit here and dialogue with you, my dear friends, but Sunday it was different .... I had to recreate an era, an atmosphere, to make me a messenger, bringing with me a stamp of history, telling it, as I loved and still love to study it, and as I love to teach it, I mean not so much through dates, names, places, but through the lives of those people who have lived it and of it they were actors, giving it, and just so, foundation and authenticity, and which personages better than Queen Victoria and Empress Elisabeth represent the synthesis, the summary of this age , beautifully expressed, as not often happens, from a dichotomy!

And then the objects, those used everyday at that time, they finally gave verisimilitude to an era that, after all, isn't so much far from us.

To wear clothing preservimg the spirit of the past gives me an inner peace that even the smartest or the most beautiful dress of today cannot give, I am fully myself, maybe it seems unbelivable, but it's real, I assure you; this time I wanted everything acquired concreteness for those people who saw me and had come to listen to me, I wished profoundly to stop the time for that couple of hours that would have restricted the conference to be able to recover almost as Proust 'the flavor of the past', to the point of wishing that even my hair was adequate and perfectly attuned to this occasion ...

- picture 18

Needless to say that I have many, so many people whom have to be grateful for this gift, beginning with Massimo Sannelli, which had to be present at my side, but at the last moment had to give up this commitment, characterized by a sweetness , a kindness and disposability of other times, who introduced me to Dr.Marco Giacinto Pellifroni, a wonderful person who has carefully organized the event, to Prof.Giorgio Girard, former professor of Psychology at the University of Turin, director of the Cultural Association Domenica Est at whose seat, in Finale Ligure, the meeting was held, and the friends who have helped me to make my appearance as much Victorian as possible, Patrizia, author of the beautiful headdress made with the whole enthusiasm with which she manages to reproduce artistic creations of coiffeures of the Victorian era, and Susanna, adorable creature, as an Angel always by my side, who achieves with extreme love true works of art (hers are the two cameos with the Empress face) ... and finally my husband

- picture 19

which, lovingly, follows me everywhere supporting every initiative of mine, supporting me always lovingly and collaborating with me ... and then ... and then my parents, of course, we rarely think about it, but from them everything has been started and comes from their love, first of all.

A gift, big, huge, was offered to me last Sunday, a gift that will remain forever in my heart ... thank you all, with great affection and a lot of gratitude.

See you soon

Mr. Joel Roberts Poinsett and the ' Star of the Holy Night' - The history of the Poinsettia.

Silhouette from “Brown’s Portrait Gallery”, published by E.B. Kellogg and E.C. Kellogg in 1845

A presto

The son of a French doctor, Joel Roberts Poinsett (1779 - 1851) - above we see him in a portrait by Charles Fenderich (1805 - 1887) - was appointed, in 1825, the first US ambassador to Mexico by President Madison, opportunity that allowed him to crown his career as a diplomat and politician; in despite of having a degree in medicine, he was a deeply passionate lover of botany to the pointo to take care of several greenhouses located inside his property in Greenville, in South Carolina.

During a visit in the southest part of this' new land ', and more precisely in the area known as ' the Taxco Alarcon', he came upon by chance, with great astonishment, in the beautiful winter flowering of the plant then known as the 'Mexican flame leaf ', a bush with huge red flowers of very ancient origins; this tropical shrub, which has about 100 different species and reaches, in its natural habitat, the height of 12 feet, was called 'Cuetlaxochitl' by the ancient people of the Aztecs who used the flowers to make religious rites, being the colour red considered a symbol of purity, to obtain a useful dye for clothing and for their faces, and from the latex contained in the flowering stems was obtained a febrifuge beverage.

- picture 2 - Silhouette from “Brown’s Portrait Gallery”, published by E.B. Kellogg and E.C. Kellogg in 1845

Inevitably interested in this new plant, Poinsett sent a 'champion' to some friends of his, including John Barroom from Philadelphia, who gave the litle plant to Robert Buist, a nurseryman of his knowledge living in Pennsylvania. Robert Buist was probably the first person to have sold the Poinsettia with its botanical name, which is the Latin name by which we know it today, that of 'Euphorbia pulcherrima' (meaning 'the most beautiful Euphorbia').
It is supposed that it became known as Poinsettia in the mid-1830s, when it spread the new that it was Mr Poinsett to import it into America from Mexico.

But how it became traditionally linked to Christmas ? Well, there's an old Mexican legend that goes in this way:

- picture 3

Once upon a time there was a very very poor girl named Pepita who had no gift to bring to the baby Jesus on the night of the Christmas Eve. While Pepita was sadly walking towards the chapel, her cousin Pedro, who was with her, tried to console her saying: "I am sure that even the smallest gift, given with love, will make the baby Jesus happy."

Pepita truly didn't know what to bring him, and so it was that she thought to eradicate a handful of weeds at the edge of the road and made a small bouquet, feeling quite embarrassed because she hadn't anything more precious; as soon as she walked through the chapel to reach the altar, she remembered the words of Pedro and suddenly felt relieved; she reached the crib, knelt herself to place there, at its foot, her humble gift: suddenly, this bunch of weeds bloomed in a profusion of live-red flowers star-shaped, which, from that day, are known as 'Flores de Noche Buena', or 'flower of the Holy Night'; the star-shaped flower and the leaves of the Poinsettia are sometimes interpreted as a symbol of the Star of Bethlehem, the comet that guided the Magi to the hut where Jesus was born, the bracts or red coloured leaves symbolize the blood of Christ, while the white leaves represent his purity.

- picture 4

In the late Regency period, therefore, and even more in the Victorian era, the Poinsettia will join the other plants with which Americans decorated their homes, that is the mistletoe, the holly, the ivy and only in the late Victorian age and in the Edwardian one it will acquire fame in Britain, already notoriously traditionalist.

- picture 5 - VintageHolidayCrafts.com

Even today, alas, our time is coming to the end, after having been told these little anecdotes and curiosities about the origin of the symbols that we still today bind to the Christmas Season, I'm concluding by extending to all of you an invitation to the conference that next Sunday I will keep together with Massimo Sannelli, author, actor, artist, filmmaker ... such an immense emotion and a great honour are awaiting for me!
This would be an excellent opportunity to meet you, I know that for my English-speaking friends it wouldbe very hard to realize, in Finale Ligure, if you have no other commitments, we will be there to talk about the Victorian age, the Empress Elizabeth of Austria and of the aura of charm that always she brought with her, that even today, for all of us who celebrate her memory, continues to be very present and alive.

Here below you can see the poster of the event that contains more precise indications about the time and the place where the meeting will take place,

please contact me (tenutageremia@gmail.com) if you will be nearby and will need further information to reach us.
I'm leaving you with the hope that in your heart the Spirit of Christmas dwells always, every day of the year.... and I'm waiting for you !

See you soon

domenica 12 ottobre 2014

I giorni genovesi dell'Imperatrice Elisabetta d'Austria.

Piazza e Chiesa dell'Annunziata

L'Imperatrice a passeggio negli anni '90

A presto

The Genoese days of the Empress Elisabeth of Austria.

The secret was to know that her true nature lived, as perfect as an unwritten number, everywhere, in the same time, in space and in time.

"The Seagull Jonathan Livingston", Richard Bach

It often blows slight, in the mornings of spring, a cool breeze that comes down from the hills that make up the array to the Gulf of the Ligurian chief town, Genoa, dotted with ancient forts, leading to lick some parts of the city in which the principal streets converge. ...
Piazza Acquaverde, which opens into the station of Porta Principe

- picture 2 and  picture 3 - Vintage postcards depicting Piazza Acquaverde and the Porta Principe Station

is one of those places in the city where always this crisp morning breath and where it makes return, at the end of the day, almost as if it wanted to come back from where it was born, and certainly Lady Parker, just got off the train on which she got on in Milan a few hours before, " in one private compartment of the first-class car bearing the N. 814" 1 would have thought that, despite arriving in a seaside town, she brought with her some of that wind that comes down from her mountains, indeed, maybe have thought that the wings of that same Zephyr had followed her there ...

Finally she had reached a seaside town .... the sea, the sea she loved so much, of which she felt the call and to which she felt so similar and linked in her deep ... so as the sea she was changeable, inconstant , wandering, always in search of new shores on which to land ... anonymous ... unspeakable ... endless ...

A carriage was waiting for her at (on it would go up the Empress, her lady-in-waiting, Countess Maria Festetics, her greek reader that replaced Constantin Christomanos, Professor Barker) and another was ready to receive her brief following,

- picture 4 - A vintage coachman leaving the Station

no one was aware of her arrival, at that hour of the late afternoon there wasn't a lot of transition in the upper area of the city ... at the end of the day, as early in the morning, are much more lively the streets of the old city, those nearest to the port,

often place of markets of flowers or fruit and vegetables coming from the fields of the Val Bisagno (still nowadays in Genoese dialect, the sellers of fruits and vegetables are known as 'besagnine') filled with people whose faces and speaks are so much various.
Genoa is a city hard to understand - so different morphologically, culturally, historically - ... so easy to love.

Two were the coachmen who were waiting for her and as soon as saw her noble figure, swathed in a mourning dress that forged her as a rare black swan - accompanied by another lady, also dressed in a dark suit - one came down from his seat to open, with reverence, the door of the carriage that should have led her to the Miramar, the imperial yacht moored in the harbor, at the Molo Giano ... Lady Parker was the name with which she introduced herself, History has 'handed her over' to us with the name of Elizabeth of Austria, the Empress.

- picture 6 - Elisabeth of Austria in a portrait by Leopold Horowitz, 1899

The Genoes stay of the Empress, lasted five days during the Holy Week in 1893, from Sunday March 26 to Friday March 31, represent one of the stages of a journey that had started from the 'Lombardo Veneto', of which she wasn't queen anymore ( the Kingdom of Lombardo-Veneto, established by the Congress of Vienna in 1815 and annexed to the Empire of Austria-Hungary, lost the Lombardia at the end of the Second War of Independence in 1859 to dissolve then finally in 1866, at the end of the Third War of Independence, when the Veneto was ceded to the Kingdom of Italy with the Treaty of Prague), made as simple tourist and just as a tourist she arrived to Genoa for went on her way to Naples and finally reach Corfu where her solemn Achilleion, the sumptuous palace in neo-classical style made built almost like a hymn to her hero, Achilles, between 1890 and 1891, a year after the tragic loss of her son, Crown Prince Rudolf, in the tragedy of Mayerling (1889), awaited her.

IL SECOLO XIX didn't miss the chance to follow step by step, through a chronicler of its, every day of the August Lady, who could not pass unnoticed given the size of her figure, everyone saw it was clear she was a high ranking person ... but she was stripped of her historicity, Genoa didn't see her as the Empress, the Genoese admired her walking beside her because she didn't amalgamate with the crowd, indeed, she emerged because of the anonymity of her deepest inner ... ontologically Elisabeth of Austria was 'not present', with her she only brought the 'instinctual istance', to put it using terms dear to Freud, her love for art, her need to communicate with the waters of the sea, her desire to take long walks, her attraction to the mystery of death drove her... the Empress was "really here absent, here is the translation of the postmodern" more complete incognito "of the 1893" 2
But let's have a look at her during her first day in the 'Superba', accompanied by the air smelling of spring and of sea, reading the records of the city newspaper reporter:

"S.M. dressed in black tibet, with a black silk belt as well.
She was wearing a black hat; she hand a fan of teak wood, and an en-tout-cas white, lined in blue. She wore very strong booties at the touriste.
Her guide had a flask and a shoulder bag.
The professor of greek dressed carefully in black.
Her lady-in-waiting was dressed in silk, with a velvet hood and cape sable.
The Empress walked briskly and safely.
Her slim and slender person, aroused the admiration of passersby, which, while not knowing her, they judged her without error, for a person of high rank.
Leaving the Church of the Annunziata, S.M. went to Corso Carbonara, where she made a stop in the studio of the sculptor Domenico Carli, where she  examined several monuments of his almost completed.
Out there, she sent her lady-in-waiting and ordered her to reach the Piazza dell'Annunziata, rent a carriage and go to Staglieno waiting for her. "3

separates the city center from the Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno where guarding ancient tombs of noble and patrician families to which Genoa gave  birth or harboured are placed allegories of Ruth, Mercy, Faith, reproductions of surviving relatives sadly deprived of their loved ones, Guardian and Protector Angels, all carved in marble by skilled hands of artist ...

- picture 11- Detail of a monument in the Cemetery of Staglieno

I wonder if in this open-air museum, whose reputation had already crossed the borders of Italy, visited, among the others, by Nietzsche and Oscar Wilde, she was looking for such inspiration for a memorial to dedicate to her Rudolf ... or maybe, more simply, she sought a dialogue with the mysterious darkness that characterizes the end of our earthly life.

"In front of the monument to Giacomo Carpaneto depicting a boat with an angel, a valuable work of Scanzi, she stopped herself a lot, and made writein her notebook the inscription: Ventured who into the sea of life had such trusty helmsman."

Those suffering from anorexia not only give performances of extraordinary energy, but arise constantly new limits to be overcome, almost as if they had  to compensate the pain coming from the punishment they unwittingly inflict depriving themselves of food; so even in this the Empress never fails to impress the reporter of IL SECOLO XIX when with impressive energy and speed in Sestri Ponente she went on the Monte Gazzo, 450 meters high above sea level, to admire the view, after having already visited and admired the same day the Villa Pallavicini in Pegli and its beautiful park filled with nostalgic neoclassical echoes

- picture 12 - Villa Pallavicini, The Temple of Diana in una photograph dated 1890

from which she'll surely be left fascinate in the name of her total dedication to the classical art, which, with its sublime linearity manifests the expression of the ideal of perfection and beauty, also drawing on its mythological world and communicating the charisma of an era that is no more, and only, fully, in the works of art, is able to revive.

And she also didn't miss the lush gardens of Villa Groppallo in Genova Nervi

that for a stretch runs along the promenade reaping the echoes and the salty breath of the sea and finally the oldest shops in the historical center of Genoa already renowned for the manifacturing production of confectionery and chocolate such as the Confectionery of art of the widow Romanengo in Piazza di Soziglia

(of which here I've already had the chance and the great pleasure to tell you about) before leaving on the morning of March 31st, plowing the waters of the Gulf, having as a destination, it is supposed, Portofino.

I would like to conclude my writing quoting the words of Massimo Sannelli, young and already famous Ligurian writer, to whom I dedicate it entirely as with the book "Una rapida ebbrezza - I giorni genovesi di Elisabetta d'Austria"which he edited together with Vittorio Laura,

- picture 15 - "Una rapida ebbrezza - I giorni genovesi di Elisabetta d'Austria", cover

has been my source of inspiration:

"In Genoa you can see the full opening of the space between sky, sea and mountains. Nietzsche exalted himself as Dionysus:" I give thanks to my fate that has made me come in that hard, austere city during the years of decadence : and when one is going to Genoa every time it's as if he had managed to escape from itself: the desire expands, you no longer have the courage to be vile "(letter to Peter Gast, April 7th, 1888). The aphorism 291 Book IV of The Gay Science is a hymn: the Genoese has always tried to "interpose between himself and his neighbor his own infinitude," "at every corner of the street, you find a man who is on his own, who knows the sea, the adventure and the East, a man who is against the law and his neighbour, as for something tedious... "These words can also be applied to Elizabeth, neither more nor less."

Thanks again to this young talent by the gentle soul which I'm linked by my training at the University of Genoa and the famous names of those who have promoted it and by the deep love for this charming and delightful character that has marked the history of the XIXth century.

An affectionate greeting to all my dearest and loyal friends and readers.

See you soon
