Vecchie guglie avvolte di scarlatto ...

Vecchi monti grondanti di tramonto,

abeti rosseggianti -

bruni felceti ammantati di cenere

dal negromante sole!

Lo scarlatto delle vecchie guglie avvolto

finché è intero il gomitolo -

la bocca avessi d'un fiammingo,

oserei dire come?

Il fuoco poi fluisce come un'onda

e va sfiorando l'erba

con movenze fuggenti di zaffiro -

quasi stesse passando una duchessa!

Emily Dickinson, 291

Bellissima, l'antica torre, originariamente merlata, venne coperta nella seconda metà del 1500 su disposizione della Marchesa Anna di Monferrato, come risulta trascritto in un convocato del settembre 1553, che dice: « … e vedereti parimente se la torre presso Bormida è stà coperta et alzato il muro acanto per puoter star in difesa … » e da qui si poteva, per mezzo del ponte levatoio, uscire all'esterno;

tra gli attoniti rami;

quanti viaggi fa la tartaruga -

e quanti calici deliba l'ape -

la dissoluta di rugiade!

E chi fece le colonne dell'arcobaleno

chi conduce le docili sfere

con vincastri di tenero azzurro?

Quali dita intrecciano stalattiti,

chi conta i chicchi della notte

perchè nessuno manchi?

Chi costruì questa casetta d'argilla

e così forte chiuse le finestre

che il mio spirito nulla può distinguere?

E chi mi farà uscire qualche giorno di gala,

con ali per volare

più belle d'ogni fasto?

Cara, amata Emily Dickinson, capace, come pochi poeti, a dire, con parole semplici, l'inesprimibile!

Con affetto vi saluto e vi auguro ogni bene.

A presto

Old spiers wrapped in scarlet ...

How the old Mountains drip with Sunset

How the Hemlocks burn—

How the Dun Brake is draped in Cinder

By the Wizard Sun—

How the old Steeples hand the Scarlet

Till the Ball is full—

Have I the lip of the Flamingo

That I dare to tell?

Then, how the Fire ebbs like Billows—

Touching all the Grass

With a departing—Sapphire—feature—

As a Duchess passed—

A walk, not far from home, embraced by the warm autumn sun on hills and vineyards reddened by the first cold, at the end of the day, reveals us the remains of our early medieval history: our eyes, from far, can see a tower .. we are going to reach Castelnuovo Bormida.

Although not far from us these are areas that I still know a little, places so steeped in history, that of a border land, often fought except by local landlords, foreigners, not least the great Bonaparte: I'm talking of the Southern Piedmont.
Yes, that's the Emperor of the French who was perhaps the last, at the end of the eighteenth century, to try to obtain these fertile lands straddled between the Ligurian Apennines and Monferrato.

And surely he will also be impressed by the castle that dominated the small town, a village which still has a few houses leaning against each other, as if trying to find comfort and respite from the cold and from the mists of the long, dark winters .

It was built between 1023 and 1033 , probably next to an already existing villa , almost certainly by the bishops of Acqui's hands, which, by the Emperor Otto III , received part of the estate in 996 as a gift, and such possession was confirmed to the episcopate of Acqui by Emperor Henry III in 1052 ( of the original building remains today the tower and part of the surrounding walls ) confirmed in 1164 by a diploma bearing the signature of Frederick Barbarossa.

All this territory, Castronovo seu Cassina , as required by Henry IV , will become part of the end of the twelfth century of the Marquis of Monferrato and , from the middle of 1330, of the Duchy of Milan , of which it was a small appendix , an extreme wedge border between territories and enemies since ever and therefore often subject to raids and robberies in the fields and damage to belongings.
About three hundred years later, precisely in 1644 , already sorely tried by the plague of 1630 that devastated much of the European population , Castelnuovo will be victim of a raid by French soldiers , that will boast the dominion of these lands after the French Revolution , lands that were the scene also of much of the fighting of the wars of independence , for becoming , finally, part of the Kingdom of Italy with the unification.

But let's take a closer look at the castle , at least from what we are allowed to see from the outside (the castle is not open to the public) :

- picture 5

it was 1490 when Pope Boniface III, expressing his concern about the vulnerability of the defenses, authorized to « edificare torrionum unum in [...] flumine Burmide deversus locum Cassinarum, quod torrionum sit et esse debeat prò fortalicio et de fortalicio dicti loci Castrinovi Burmide, attingentem muros et fortalicium dicti loci ».( to biuld a tower beside theriver Bormida starting from the preexistents old walls)

Beautiful, ancient tower, originally crenellated, was covered in the second half of 1500 on the disposal of the Marchioness of Monferrato Anna, as transcribed into a convened in September, 1553, where is written: « … e vedereti parimente se la torre presso Bormida è stà coperta et alzato il muro acanto per puoter star in difesa … » ( and yoy'llsee that the tower and the wall has been upped for defence better)

porches, loggias of clear late medieval and Renaissance mark enrich the facades of this castle, stripping it of its primitive appearance of a fortress, to give it more and more the semblance of a mansion.

I must confess that I always feel a bit of emotion when I face with historical evidence, I let myself take by the enthusiasm of seeing always new details,

details that catch my historical curiosity, but unfortunately our time was quickly running out, the last rays of the sun shone there harbingers of incipient exhaustion of the day, the light was getting more intense, but less diffused, ...

.. and so we left this quiet village in the hope of being able to come back one day and visit the castle in its interior and, turning to look behind us, like the work of a wonderful spell, we felt the thrill of seeing how beautifully it was manifesting the show of a great, touching, autumn sunset: the curtain of dusk was falling down and the sun was putting his seal on the last precious moments of that lovely November afternoon!

- picture 20

Bring me the sunset in a cup -

Reckon the morning's flagons up

And say how many Dew -

Tell me how far the morning leaps -

Tell me what time the weaver sleeps

Who spun the breadths of blue!

Write me how many notes there be

In the new Robin's extasy

Among astonished boughs -

How many trips the Tortoise makes -

How many cups the Bee partakes,

The Debauchee of Dews!

Also, who laid the Rainbow's spiers,

Also, who leads the docile spheres

By withes of supple blue?

Whose fingers string the stalactite -

Who counts the wampum of the night

To see that none is due?

Who built this little Alban House

And shut the windows down so close

My spirit cannot see?

Who'll let me out some gala day

With implements to fly away,

Passing Pomposity?
