Sheltered for the Winter.


Sweet life! how lovely to be here 
And feel the soft sea-laden breeze

They're clear and sunny days those of this first decade of the Winter and the beginning of the new year, serene, but also rather cold.




Nothing better for the rest of our succulent and Mediterranean plants that are now recovered in our ORANGERIE at the beginning of December to preserve them like every year from the cold season, sheltered from the frost and the most intense frost that they cannot stand.
The most delicate plants do not stand out here, but it is enough to give them a shelter to allow them to spend their Winter healthy and to find themselves in Spring looking very good.
Just follow me, I'm leading you in our 'tools-and-plants-shed' located in the heart of the Tenuta Geremia park.








It is quite small in size - around 20 square metres - but it is enough to accommodate the plants and furnishings that in the Summer show themselves among the foliage of the perennial shrubs and the trees populating our gardens.

On the outside, a sober Palladian style suggests an extremely rigorous setting inside too,


 actually, with chalk and wooden walls and ceilings, in its inside simplicity reigns sovereign making it every year welcoming more and more ... obviously it is not heated and, when outside the temperatures have to go down even a lot, here the mercury column does not go beyond the thermal zero, which is static, harmless even for the most delicate plants.

And it's just here that succulents, with the cold, the sunlight and their vegetativ rest, get themselves ready for their Spring blooming

Sono giorni sereni quelli di questa prima decade dell'inverno e dell'inizio del nuovo anno, sereni, ma anche piuttosto freddi.

Niente di meglio chiedono le piante grasse e mediterranee che all'inizio di dicembre ricoverai nella nostra ORANGERIE per preservarle come ogni anno dalla stagione fredda, al riparo dalla brina e dal gelo più intenso che non reggono.

Non resistono qui all'aperto le piante più delicate, ma è sufficiente dar loro un ricovero per consentire loro di trascorrere l'inverno in salute e per ritrovarsi in primavera in gran forma.

Venite, vi accompagno nel nostro 'ricovero attrezzi e piante' situato nel cuore del parco di Tenuta Geremia.

E' di modeste dimensioni - copre una superficie di circa 20 metri quadri - ma è sufficiente per accogliere le piante e gli arredi che in estate fanno mostra di sé tra le chiome degli arbusti perenni e degli alberi che popolano i nostri giardini.

All'esterno un sobrio stile palladiano fa pensare ad un ambiente estremamente rigoroso,

in realtà al suo interno, con pareti e soffitti in legno, governa la semplicità che ogni anno lo rende sempre più accogliente ... ovviamente non è riscaldato e, quando le temperature all'esterno dovessero scendere anche di molto, qui la colonnina del mercurio non si spinge oltre lo zero termico, statico, innocuo anche per le piante più gracili.

Ed è proprio qui che le succulente, con il fresco, la luce del sole ed il riposo vegetativo, si preparano per la loro fioritura primaverile.

Il fascino d'altri tempi nei fiori dell'Hydrangea Annabelle.








Quando mi capita di poter passeggiare nella quiete del mio giardino, se mi muovo in serenità, in perfetta comunione con la natura che mi circonda, mi sembra di avvertire quasi un richiamo: ci sono della piante che attirano la nostra attenzione, che vogliono essere notate ... indipendentemente dal loro aspetto (non amo le piante appariscenti), avverto soprattutto il "richiamo" di quelle che appaiono più dimesse, umili, meno notevoli, ma non per questo meno carismatiche.


Sarà perchè tutto ciò che riceviamo in dono, al di là del suo significato intrinseco, si arricchisce del valore che noi gli attribuiamo ed assume proporzioni talvolta non descrivibili a parole, sarà perchè mi piacciono le fatture fini, delicate, e le tinte sfumate e non forti, tenui e velate, ma la siepe dietro casa che vede protagoniste le Hydrangea Annabelle “Invincibelle Spirit “ ogni mattina, al mio risveglio, attira i miei primi sguardi ..







Ci sono persone che, come me amano, ricreare lo spirito delle cose passate e credo, sia stata proprio questa filosofia a guidare gli ibridatori che hanno deciso di prendere una pianta di Annabelle in un bosco, dove cresce spontanea, negli Stati Uniti, ed hanno pensato che, con il rosa antico sfumato sui petali,






piuttosto che il bianco crema con cui esiste in natura, potesse esprimere appieno il proprio fascino.
Da tempo gli ibridatori statunitensi, e non solo, cercavano di dare vita ad un'hydrangea colorata che mettesse in risalto la bellezza della Annabelle combinandola con la rifiorenza e la robustezza che la rende così naturalmente florida ed affascinante, ma come spesso accade, è stata la natura stessa a fornire lo spunto; durante un'escursione sulle Blue Ridge Mountains, Richard Olsen, laureato all'Università di Stato del North Carolina, scoprì casualmente un'hydrangea arborescens rosa e decise di lavorarvi su con il dottor Tom Ramney ibridandola più e più volte con una Annabelle.
Cinque anni e diverse migliaia di piante più tardi, riuscirono ad ottenere un individuo a fiori rosa, che meritò la definizione di “Invincibelle Spirit”: essa condivide la rusticità, e la bellezza di 'Annabelle', ma con l'aggiunta dei suoi fiori così delicatamente sfumati, impreziosisce con grazia il giardino continuando a fiorire fino ai primi freddi.

In realtà sono rosa solo a colpo d'occhio, a ben guardarli i suoi petali sono quasi noisette, orlati di ciclamino e di una texture quasi iridescente, come se sopra recassero la polvere fine che hanno le farfalle sulle proprie ali per volare.







Tante piccole farfalle, un po' stinte, come quelle che si trovano stampate su qualche biglietto vittoriano consunto dal tempo, tante piccole farfalle che formano un cuscino fiorito, pronte per spiccare il volo ..
Per le graduazioni così tenui di cui si colorano, i suoi cespugli sembrano grandi mazzi di fiori finto secco, anche con i fiori appena sbocciati .. non è forse questa una pianta che, anche se ibridata di recente, trabocca di fascino antico ed evoca atmosfere tipiche dei giardini d'altri tempi, parla il linguaggio delle emozioni, comunica con i nostri sensi, suscita stati d'animo che si fatica ad esprimere in parole, come fosse un antico monile, un sonetto, una dolce melodia… ?!?

The charm of past times: Hydrangea Annabelle

When it happens to me to be able and walk in the quiet of my garden, if I move into serenity, in perfect communion with nature that surrounds me, it seems to feel almost a reminder to me: there are the plants attracting our attention, wanting to be noticed ... regardless of their appearance (I don't like showy plants), I feel the "recall" specially of those that seem more resigned, humble, less noticeable, but not less charming.

Maybe because all we receive as a gift, beyond its inherent meaning, is enriched by the value we attach it and assume proportions that, sometimes, cannot be described in words, maybe because I like delicates features, nuanced and not at all strong hues, subtle and veiled, but the flowerbed behind the house that features the Annabelle Hydrangea "Invincibelle Spirit", every morning, when I wake up, attracts my eyes first ..

There are people who, like me, love recreating the spirit of past times and I it to be the philosophy that guided the breeders who have decided to take a plant of Annabelle in a wood, where it grows spontaneously, in the United States, and have thought that, with antique pink gradient on the petals,

 rather than the white cream which exist in nature, it could fully express its own charm.
From time American breeders, and not inly ones, were trying to give life to un'hydrangea colored that would highlight the beauty of Annabelle combining it with the repeat flowering and robustness that makes it so naturally thriving and fascinating, but as often happens, was the nature to provide the inspiration; while hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Richard Olsen, graduated from the State University of North Carolina, accidentally discovered a pink hydrangea arborescens and decided to work with Dr. Tom Ramney crossing it more several times with an Annabelle.
Five years and many thousands of plants later, they were able and obtain an individual with pink flowers, which gained the definition of "Invincibelle Spirit": it shares the rusticity, and the beauty of 'Annabelle', but with the addition of its flowers so delicately shaded, it gracefully adorns the garden continuing to bloom until the first frosts.
 Actually if we look at them paying attention, they are just rose: its petals are almost noisette, hemmed cyclamen and show an almost iridescent texture, and seem to have the fine dust that have butterflies on their wings to fly above.

Lots of small butterflies, ancient, a bit faded, like those found on some printed Victorian postcards, consumed by time, lots of small butterflies forming a flower pillow, ready to fly ..
For the subtle graduations of which they are colored, its bushes look great bunches of fake – dry flowers, even with the freshly bloomed flowers .. Isn't this a plant that, although recently hybridized, brimms with ancient charm and evokes the typical atmosphere of the gardens of the past, thet speaks the language of emotions, communicates with our senses, evokes moods that are difficult to express in words, as if it was an ancient jewel, a sonnet, a sweet melody ...?!?
