Sweet life! how lovely to be here
And feel the soft sea-laden breeze
Strike my flushed face, the spruce's fair
Free limbs to see, the lesser trees'
Bare hands to touch, the sparrow's cheep
To heed, and watch his nimble flight
Above the short brown grass asleep.
Love glorious in his friendly might,
Music that every heart could bless,
And thoughts of life serene, divine,
Beyond my power to express,
Crowd round this lifted heart of mine!
Claude McKay (1889 - 1948), Winter in the Country
They're clear and sunny days those of this first decade of the Winter and the beginning of the new year, serene, but also rather cold.
Nothing better for the rest of our succulent and Mediterranean plants that are now recovered in our ORANGERIE at the beginning of December to preserve them like every year from the cold season, sheltered from the frost and the most intense frost that they cannot stand.
The most delicate plants do not stand out here, but it is enough to give them a shelter to allow them to spend their Winter healthy and to find themselves in Spring looking very good.
Just follow me, I'm leading you in our 'tools-and-plants-shed' located in the heart of the Tenuta Geremia park.
It is quite small in size - around 20 square metres - but it is enough to accommodate the plants and furnishings that in the Summer show themselves among the foliage of the perennial shrubs and the trees populating our gardens.
On the outside, a sober Palladian style suggests an extremely rigorous setting inside too,
actually, with chalk and wooden walls and ceilings, in its inside simplicity reigns sovereign making it every year welcoming more and more ... obviously it is not heated and, when outside the temperatures have to go down even a lot, here the mercury column does not go beyond the thermal zero, which is static, harmless even for the most delicate plants.
And it's just here that succulents, with the cold, the sunlight and their vegetativ rest, get themselves ready for their Spring blooming
“Never are voices so beautiful as on a winter's evening, when dusk almost hides the body,
and they seem to issue from nothingness
with a note of intimacy seldom heard by day.”
Virginia Woolf (1882 - 1941), Night and Day
And on these verses that recreate the characteristic charm of the Winter late afternoons,
I'm sending you my warmest hug,

a presto 💕

RispondiEliminaWinter is cold, but it's a rebirth come spring and I'm waiting for spring to arrive. My favorite time of year.

@ Sandee
EliminaI welcome you with the warmest hug ever, Dearie !

Dear Dany: Your plants do look happy in that sweet building! So tranquil here at your blog. It is delight to visit and refresh!

What a beautiful tour Dany. It's so refreshing to see flowers in Winter.
RispondiEliminaWe are covered in snow here with very cold temperatures.
Wishing you happiness and health for 2008. xo
@ thel day
Eliminaoh, how I'd love to have snow here too, we do need it so much during our Winters, but for a few years it snows so little, alas !
Wishing you too all my best for the New Year just begun,
always thinking of you with love and gratitude, Sweetie ღ❀ღ
Winter certainly has us in its icy grip here. Today's high temperature - minus 14!
RispondiElimina@ David Gascoigne
EliminaI envy you and your so cold temperatures, that's the Beauty of Winter ... to enjoy our hearth, to stay warm and cozy beside the fireplace while sipping some hot tea ... that's the meaning of this so wonderful season to me !
Enjoy your nest, dearest friend of mine,
and keep warm ♡ஐ♡
It is so cold here, I wonder if anything will make it this winter. Although the mild winters with the light freeze and thaw cycle can do way more damage, than an entirely dormant winter. Your photos are lovely---and so remind me of Monticello and Jefferson's Orangerie...where he actually had Orange and Lemon trees.
RispondiElimina@ BarberryLaneDesigns
Eliminayou're always so heartily welcome, sweetest friend !
Honestly it's the first time I hear about Jefferson's estate called Monticello, located in Virginia I suppose, I wonder how lovely it is and such a comparison makes me feel flattered !
Thanking you heartily, both for visiting and for commenting,
I'm sending all my love to you,
Dear Sandi ಌ•❤•ಌ
beautiful flowers in winter, as always your blog is an oasis of peace :)

I am dazzled and feel rather privileged to be able to step into your orangerie with you in these beautiful photos. How wonderful to have a spot to care for your plants in this season. (I fear all mine shall die -- it was -7 F when I got up this morning. Even my garage is below 0, I think!)
RispondiEliminaYour space is so elegant and I love that inside you have chalk walls and ladders and that wonderful clock. Someday I must see it in person.

Gorgeous plants Daniela! Is that a squirrel sleeping on one of your succulants?!!!
RispondiEliminaHappy New Year to you and your family.
Have a wonderful weekend and stay warm :)
@ Prunella Pepperpot
Eliminathat's not a squirrel, but a 'relative' of his, Dearie, he's a dormouse, we have so many of them under our roofs and into our woods.
During the Autumn they look for a comfortable place where to spend their Winter, and sometimes they wake up to eat just a little, and then come back to sleep again, until Spring arrives.
Well, this so wonderful creature has chosen our Orangerie to spend his Winter, I'm feeling so, so happy looking at him :)!
Wishing you a most lovely Sunday,
always thinking of you with love and thankfulness ✿*✿
Oh such a lovely post to see in the middle of winter, all those lovely flowers blooming and wonderful green plants are so good to see right now!! That shed looks so neat, how special to have that on your property :) Love how you have decorated the inside!

Eliminaas I wrote in my comment on your blog post and party which I linked this article with, he's a dormouse, he's completely harmless, he just need to sleep quietly all the Winter long, ... he has just the same needs of my plants ... probably he has chosen the one he liked most and began to sleep ツ!

RispondiEliminaDear Daniela, your Orangery is very lovely! Those flowers are so beautiful!
RispondiEliminaThe fountain is amazing. I haven’t seen a working fountain with icicles yet. :-) They don't work in our country in winter.
I love the poem.

Heated or not, I think you'd find me spending time in there a lot! Looks like a lovely place to "overwinter."
RispondiEliminaLovely poem and images! Have a great weekend!
RispondiEliminaWhat a lovely orangerie! I would love to spend time relaxing there!
RispondiEliminaWhat a lovely building and yard! It is a wonder to me, as we go through some extreme temperatures, that anything survives. Spring is such a miracle after our long, cold Canadian winter.
RispondiEliminaSending you warm hugs,

Beautiful post, Dany. How nice to have a "winter house" for the plants. The succulents took my breath away. I will have to do a lot of replanting in the spring. The bad weather has really done a lot of damage to the tropicals in my garden.
RispondiEliminaOh Dani, I adore your darling too and plant shed! It doesn't need to be large; it's just delightful!! I also enjoyed seeing your winter garden. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
