Franziska (Fanny) Angerer Feifalik, Sisi's hairdresser and occasional invaluable double.

compagna fedele a Corte,

 Primo piano sulle mani dell'imperatrice

Franz Xaver Winterhalter, 1865, detail

Eravamo quindi ritornate a Marsiglia.
Ah, come era tutto buono !

a presto 💕

There is a photograph that the Habsburgs
have hand down to us
and we know as one of the last shots
that portrays the old Empress, now hoary ,
with devout Ida von Ferenczy,
faithful companion at Court,
and affectionate friend and confidant ...

Well, for long it is the focus of debates a certain perplexity about the authenticity of the person who sits in the foreground, at her writing table, with a dreamy gaze, on the right side of the image ...

- picture 3

- picture 4 - Close-up on the Empress' hands

Historians and biographers have always been led us to believe that she were the Empress, but we all know that after the age of 40, she no longer wanted to be immortalized by any photographer, the few photographs that we have dating from after 1875 see her portrayed screened by a parasol, or, more often, by a fan ...

- picture 5 on the left - ... It is said that she didn't want to show the signs of her premature aging, which, inherited from her maternal side, was troubling her, despite the healthy life she was leading ... perhaps more than the long walks breathing the oxygen of the mountains of Tyrol and the Swiss Alps could decidedly her incorrect way of feeding herself since almost exclusively she ate proteins that helped her to be so vital, active and strong in spite of her marked thinness, but completely deprived by those nutrients that only a complete and varied diet can provide - to the point to cause her an early form of arthritis and gout that will induce her to leave the hunting preventing her to ride already quite young.

... Reliable sources tell us of a rash unpleasant to look at, that would compromise the beauty of her face and that she did not like to show ... the fact is that for years we continue to wonder who in fact the above-mentioned lady is, a lady by her features so very marked, from the face more squared than that of the Empress, and, although lean, more corpulent than Her, from the stubby hands, the more bulging eyes ... very, very similar to Fanny Feifalik, Sisi's hairdresser, the one who had created the unique hairstyle to keep in order Her long and flourishing hair, with the braid that adorned her head like a crown, to go down on her shoulders and then come back on the head making a sort of cloak, a natural train,

hairstyle which often her sisters took as an example, I'm thinking especially to Sophie Charlotte, became Duchesse d'Alençon, who greatly admired her older sister and saw in her a model to follow in everything ...

- FRANZISKA ANGERER FEIFALIK -

- picture 10

She was the daughter of a midwife and a barber who worked in Spittelberg, a district of Vienna, where she was born in 1842; shortly after the apprenticeship she worked in the most famous theaters of the capital and soon her skills of haidresser led her to put herself in evidence as to be, still young, called to prepare young actresses before they entered the scene at the Burgtheater, where she remained for a very little time since her original and imaginative hairstyles were immediately noticed by the Empress who didn't hesitate to summon her at the Hofburg to remain by Her side, leaving her previous job.
Long, it is said, was the debate about the title at which to assume the young girl, as if simple hairdresser or rather as a personal hair-stylist,

- picture 11 on the right - and as a result about the relative compensation, which at the end was fixed at 2000 gold ducats per year, a more than respectable salary if we think that at that time it corresponded to that of an university professor and if we also think that the Empress had not forbidden the girl to lend herself, even occasionally, to style the actresses of the Court and the palace Ladies who requested her work, which means that Fanny 'rounded off' her imperial remuneration making it 'rise' even further.

She became the most famous hairdresser of the Empire and had surely gained the great merits which contributed, with her decidedly original hairstyles, to create that image so diaphanous and almost transcendental of the Empress that every Lady of the time could only admire and envy.
Fanny every morning was the protagonist of the ritual of combing - hairstyling the Empress: dressed in black dress with a long train, with a white apron tied around her waist, she ran around the Empress who was sitting on a special chair , wrapped in a decorated white lace cloak; the young girl using the so-called "magic comb" - which according to the Empress beliefs, given the materials by which it was made, amber and silver, would have to prevent hair fall - amongst the golden-brown cascade of hair that was the pride of Her Majesty, she passed her slender and delicate fingers, strictly with no rings, with short nails and covered with white cotton gloves, to 'caress' them before tying them in the most imaginative ways that her creativity could suggest her (just think to styling accompanied by diamond stars that went down in history, created for a famous dance of Court of 1865, also immortalized in the famous painting by Winterhalter that very often we happen to admire).

- picture 12

The hair which, alas, remained trapped in the comb or fell down, was at the end of the ceremony shown the Empress on a silver platter, but Fanny, knowing her Lady, feeling love for Her and knowing how much She regretted to see it and how Her mood could fail, had devised a little trick ... she kept an adhesive strip applied under her apron where she made adhering, in secret, a part of it !

About every three weeks Fanny and Her Empress were engaged in the ritual of washing hair, which always rediscovered new essences, leaving unaltered the fundamental ingredients, cognac and egg yolks.

But the sweet Fanny competed not only the responsibility of the Empress' hair, she was the protagonist of the so-called "Measuring Service": the Empress, lover of Her own body and physical fitness, wanted Fanny every morning and every evening to measure Her waist, calves and thighs, and to note them in a special copybook.

And yet another very unusual role was ascribed to the Empress's personal hair-stylist, always at her side even while travelling abroad, which, as we all know, after the death of the crown prince, more and more will see her busy and away from the narrow Viennese Court: She repeatedly took advantage of Fanny's impeccable behavior to maintain Her anonymity ... yes, I'm just telling you that in most cases the slight resemblance which there was between the two women, at least as for their image, seen from a general point of view,

- picture 13 - A rare image of the Empress, dating back to the 60's, portrayed with one of her beloved dogs, probably Houseguard

was often a cause of amusement for the Empress, given abroad, where She wasn't known, it happened that Her hairdresser 'took the place of the Empress' being mistaken for Her Majesty and of it She wanted to benefit in more circumstances: in 1874 the Empress arrived in Strasbourg where She wanted to visit the cathedral fearing, however, to be recognized, which oppressed her a lot, and therefore decided to anticipate the visit of a few hours. When She returned to the hotel where She was staying with Her entourage, She saw her stylist who welcomed and greeted with dignity the people who rushed from right and from left, convinced of being in the presence of the Empress; She, therefore, watched the scene from afar drawing such a great delight, with no doubt, and minding of not to interfer.
In 1885 the Empress left Fanny in the port of Izmir on a vessel to receive the honors of the local dignitaries, while She,   unnoticed, on a barge, reached the coasts of the city, and, unrecognized by anyone, made a delectable tour around the old city center.
And finally, let's let the young lady of honor of the Empress, the Countess Irma Sztáray, who spent next to the Empress the last four years of her life, to assist Her until the end, that tragic September 10th, 1898, in Geneva, who, in her memoirs of the year 1894, noted an incident that occurred when they went to the French Riviera and were about to leave Marseilles:

We then came back to Marseilles. We were staying at the Hotel de la Paix, where the first concern of Her Majesty was to order a wonderful lunch.
We started with one of the Sovereign's favorite dishes,  French oysters, which was followed by fish and meat, both excellent. To finish with wild strawberries. Ah, how it was all good ! We drank Asti Spumante, a rough wine, the only one that Her Majesty liked. [...] Perhaps I never ate so well as that day. And all the pleasant things come to an end: an ice cream! We went to eat one of them in a confectionery and we occupied the time that was left looking at the shop windows and doing purchases.
At half a hour before our departure we were already at the station, where we witnessed a pretty funny scene.
People must have known, in one way or another, that we would go to catch the train, so when we arrived on the dock, we found small groups of people who flocked to see the Empress.
Generally these expressions of interest afflicted much Her Majesty, but this time she did everything to satisfy the people's curiosity ... before Her arrival !
Now we were curious to know why all eyes were pointed toward a certain direction and what was inspiring that respectful silence. We approached cautiously and discovered the key to the mystery. Frau Feifalik, the hairdresser of Her Majesty, walked up and down the platform, with majestic gait, doing her best to look like the Empress. What a pretty humorous story it would had drawn a hand of an artist!
Her Majesty found this a very funny interlude.
"Don't let's disturb the good Feifalik" She said, and went quickly on the train without be noticed.

But let's come back to the photograph in question; after what I have just described to you, isn't it even more likely that the woman photographed isn't Sisi, but Fanny?
And if I show you this picture that portrays Fanny at a more mature age along with Ida von Ferenczy, who holds her hand, knelt at her feet,

- picture 16

and if I cut out a first plan to put it beside that of the mysterious lady, don't you think this hypothesis to be not only more believable, but even a real fact ?
Did Fanny played this ... 'game' too for her beloved Empress ?

- picture 17

For this lady whom the Empress had wanted at Her side and had become a very special companion, Her Majesty had also made a strong exception to the rules: all the women that She had at Her service had to keep the hen, if they wanted  to get married She would have immediately discharged them from their post at Court, but when in 1866 Fanny fell in love with Hugo Feifalik, a middle-class employee of bank, and expressed the desire to marry him, the Empress agreed to keep her close to Her and, indeed, at Court found employment also her future husband, who made a quick rise to fame to reach eventually the role of Treasurer of the Noble order of the Starry Cross - Sternkreuzorden -, a women's chivalric order founded inside the Hapsburg Empire in 1668 by Eleonora Gonzaga, the widow of Emperor Ferdinand III.

These are some of the curiosities belonging to the most intimate aspect, that is to say to the private life, of a woman who, with the ethereal veil of charisma and grace which, partly deliberately, partly quite unconsciously, she was wrapped in, helped to write the history of politics and femininity of the XIXth century, becoming a myth that persists over time.

May it reach you, eventually, my most sincere thanks,
filled with joy, affection and gratitude

see you soon 💕

10.September 1898, als Sie wiederkam - Commemorando l'assassinio dell'Imperatrice Elisabetta d'Austria, Regina d'Ungheria.

" Come vi sentite Maestà ? Non vi è successo niente ? ".
" Ditemi, cosa voleva quell'uomo da me ".
" Quale uomo, Maestà, il portiere dell'albergo ? ".
" No, l'altro, quell'uomo spaventoso ! ".

La contessa, aiutata da alcune persone dell'equipaggio, cercò di rianimare l'imperatrice che diede segni di ripresa, ma erano quelle le ultime stille di vita che il suo cuore ferito riusciva a concederle;

Queste furono le sue ultime parole, poi cadde all'indietro senza conoscenza.

Luccheni aveva pugnalato l'imperatrice. 6

Peter Nicolai Arbo, Valkyrien, 1896

Bionde Valchirie, a voi diletta sferzar de’ cavalli,

perché l’hai tolto a qualche regia scure

il ferro per il tuo pugnal plebeo.

vv.48-50, Nel carcere di Ginevra, Giovanni Pascoli

LUIGI LUCCHENI: RITRATTO DI UN MISERO EMARGINATO.

Tuo focolare era il dolor del mondo,
o senza tetto!

gemere, o figlio. E sorge una lunga eco
nel cavo sonno al tacito lamento.

[...]

O nell’immoto sonno ombre che vanno!
Io piango, o figlio, sopra il tuo destino;
piango per ciò, che non t’uccideranno,

ti lasceranno vivere Caino!

E così i fiori bianchi erano arrivati a lei!

Un grazie, dal cuore, a tutti voi,

a presto

"I would like to leave this world as the bird taking his flight and disappearing into the sky, or as the smoke that rises in blue spirals in front of our eyes and the next moment there is no more": one day she said these words to me, words which now came back to my mind as a sigh of a poetic soul beseeching a poetic end, a departure from the scene on tiptoe. She had expressed the same concept talking to Baroness Rothschild on the day before her assassination as a prophecy:

"I would like that my soul could fly into the sky through a hole in my heart."
The sky had fulfilled this desire.1

On September 10th, 1898, at 13.40,  tragically Elizabeth Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary left this life of ours, consequently an attack occurred in Geneva, where she was spending incognito one of her coveted holidays far away from the narrowness of the Court and the political crisis which was deeply riven by deep ideological divisions between the nations and the major colonial conflicts of the end of the century, on the banks of Lake Geneva, near the pier, in the process of embarking on the boat "Géneve"; Luigi Lucheni - we'll call him Luccheni as they wanted the chronicles of the time -, of Italian origin, but born in Paris, was the proud author of it.
So, with you, here, today, I like to celebrate and remember Her through the memories of those who was beside her in those last moments of her short, languid, sad existence, which probably ended in the way that she has always wanted: without suffering, for the others and for herself, without diseases and agonies that would have saddened her family, without pain, without suffering ... for anyone ...

[...] Countess Szaray told me that, on the morning of that day ( Septemper 10th, 1898, N.of the A. ), she went into the Empress's room, as usual, to ask how she had slept, and found her imperial mistress looking pale and sad.

" I have had a strange experience," said Eisabeth. " I was awakened in the middle of the night by the bright moonbeams which filled my room, for the servants had forgotten to draw the blinds. I could see the moon from my bed;

and it seemed to have the face of a woman weeping. I don't know if it is a presentiment, but I have an idea that I shall meet with misfortune."

WHEN THE FATE OPENS ITS DARKS WINGS ...

- picture 3

After going out for having some shopping around mid morning, Her Majesty and Irma Sztáray, who, as Her loyal Lady of honor, was at her side even that tragic and fateful day, returned to the Hotel Beau Rivage, where they were staying in Geneva, in the very first afternoon to go back in their rooms, drinking a bit of fresh milk and get ready to take the boat to Caux, but it was getting late, the Hungarian noblewoman was apprehensive for the fear that the ferry would have left without them, while the Empress seemed to temporize ...
I quote from the memoirs of Irma Sztáray:

I remember two figures bowed deeply in front of the hotel. They had to be the hotel keeper and the porte. It was exactly 13:35 when we crossed the threshold.
God Almighty! If those five minutes later could have been eliminated by the flowing of your time!
We skirted the lake. The ground was burning under my shoes. We walked in front  of the monument of Braunschweiger when the Empress, as happy as a carefree child unable to keep for herself what's on her mind, said, pointing at two trees:
"Look, Irma, the chestnut trees are in bloom! At Schönbrunn there are some blooming twice a year and the Emperor wrote me that they are in full bloom now."
"Majesty the signal of the ship"! I cried and I counted by instinct one ... two ... the succession of the gloomy shots ringing.
In that moment I noticed, at some distance, a man who, as chased by someone, appeared from behind a tree on the roadside and ran to another nearby, from thence with a jump he reached the iron railing on the lake, then back a tree and so approached us in this zig zag walking on the sidewalk. "Here's another that makes us being in delay!", I thought instinctively looking at him again as he reached the railing and jumped from there while he began to run obliquely towards us.
Instinctively I stepped forward to protect Her Majesty from the man, but now he seems to stumble, go forward and at the same time he slam his hand against the Empress.

As struck by a lightning, the Empress fell quietly back and I, beside myself, I leaned over her with a single cry of despair.
God of Heaven! The day when I will present myself before You to realize my actions, you'll remember this horrible moment ...
I went through all the anguish of death and instead of my lips paralyzed, it was my prostrate soul who asked mercy Our Savior. And then, it was as if the sky did close in front of me.
The Empress opened her eyes and looked around. His eyes revealed that she was fully conscious. Then with my help she rose slowly from the ground.
A coachman helped me, Heaven bless him!
It seemed a miracle that she now was squarely in front of me. Her eyes sparkled, her face was flushed, her magnificent braids, loosened in the fall, were descending like a crown that was going to slipping from her head. She was indescribably beautiful and regal. The joy prevailed on the terror. I asked in a choked voice:
"How do you feel Majesty? Has nothing happened?".
"No - she replied with a smile - nothing has happened."
That in that cursed hand there was a dagger, at that time neither her nor me could imagine it.
In the meanwhile people who had come from all parts, outraged by the brutal assault, asked the Empress if she had not been damaged.
And she, with great cordiality, thanked everyone for the kindness in his own language - German, French, English - confirmed that she had not stolen anything and allowed the driver to clean up her dusty dress.
In the meantime, he had arrived on the scene also the porter of the Beau Rivage, which had witnessed that terrible scene and insisted we went back into the hotel.
"Why? - Asked the Empress, as she tried to fix back her hair, - nothing has happened. Let's hurry, rather, to reach the steamer."
Since she couldn't get back in order her hair, she put on her hat, she grabbed her fan and her parasol, took her leave with kindness of the people who came and we left again. During the walk, she asked:
"Tell me, what did that man want from me."
"What man, Majesty, the doorman?".
"No, the other, that scary man."
"I ignore it, Majesty, but, there's no doubt, he was an infamous villain!".
"Maybe he wanted to steal my watch," she added after a while '.
Her Majesty was advancing by my side with energetic and elastic step, her demeanor looked proud and she refused to lean on my arm.
After a while he turned to me:
"I'm pale, isn't it?".
"A little - I answered, - maybe because of fear."
In the meanwhile the porter reached us to bring the news that the thief had been caught.
"What did he say?" Asked the Empress.
When I repeated her the news and I looked at her, I saw that her features were altered by grief.
Frightened, I begged her to tell me the truth, what she felt, and ifs he had pain, and while she went on the road with no apparent difficulty, I was glued to every step of hers, terribly worried.
"It seems to me that my chest makes me a little pain" she said.
We arrived at the port. She crossed the runway ahead of me still walking quite quickly, but as soon as she found herself on the boat, she was seized by dizziness. 3

The countess, aided by some people of the crew, tried to revive the Empress who showed signs of recovery, but those were the last drops of life that her wounded heart could grant;

A soul that would find herself on that border where the realm of bliss is adjacent to that of damnation, and be waiting to see which door would open before her, must have felt the same feelings that seized me in those moments. It came over me a ray of light which gave me strength, but my soul felt the icy breath of black wings and the proximity of the eternal night.

- picture 5

The Empress's eyes were open, but her confused glance and already veiled, looked inquisitive at whoever was around her ...

Her eyes searched the sky, then stared at the Dents-du-Midi and from there slid slowly on me to imprint themselves forever in my soul.

"What happened to me then?".
These were her last words, then she fell back unconscious. 5

The Empress wore a small black silk corset I wanted to open to give her relief. When I loosened the laces I noted on the cambric shirt she wore under a dark spot near her heart, the size of a silver florin. What was it? But now the dreadful truth clearly appeared to me. Opening the shirt I saw in the area around her heart a small triangular wound from which descended a drop of coagulated blood.
Luccheni had stabbed the Empress. 6

It was 13:40.

The press around the  whole old continent quickly spread the tragic news and immediately a deep grief arose everywhere ...

From Vienna it came promptly the authorization to perform the autopsy, but without executing the embalming of the august body, ritual by all the Habsburgs, but which only the Court physicians had to do.
So, her reassembled body, was introduced in the coffin and exhibited in the Hall of the Hotel, which became a makeshift mortuary.

The news of the Empress's assassination shook the whole Europe: the voices of dismay, grief and sincere emotion of sovereigns and heads of state also joined those of artists and writers, and we who are, or rather, were, a people of poets, welcomed the echo of a vast common sorrow in a feeling genuinely moved that became lyric:
the day after the funeral, which took place on September 17th (the Sovereign is buried in the Kaisergruft inside the P.P. Kapuzinern)

In Italy Carducci wrote, almost spontaneously, between September 22nd and 25th, Alle Valchirie (published first on the «Rivista d’Italia», Rome, I, October 15th, 1898, and then collected in Rime e ritmi, 1899 )- Per i funerali di Elisabetta Imperatrice Regina, in which the poet invokes the female protagonists of the Nordic mythology flanking the God Odin, already celebrated by Wagner (Der Ring des Nibelungen, cited in the first day Die Walküre, 1854-1856), whose purpose was to choose the most heroic among the deads and bring them to the Valhalla:

Blondes Valkyries, you enjoy to lash your horses
Fluttering above the clouds, the steep straight to heaven.

Away from the uniform mourning, from the slow weeping of the clerks
abduct, now, flying, of the Wittelsbach the woman.

vv.1-4 Alle Valchirie - Per i funerali di Elisabetta Imperatrice Regina, Giosuè Carducci

Gabriele d'Annunzio, not less shaken by the news of the Empress, published on «Il Mattino» of Naples of September 29th - 30th, 1898 an article he entitled La virtù del ferro, in which he celebrated the heroine of the dream, this creature without slumber, transfigured, in the name of the aestheticism of his pen, which triumphs of the light that dazzles the time of the passing away, whose beauty and whose fortitude seem unfolding now as never before, thanks to a crude dagger so deadly and fatal, but by the incomparable virtue of having once and for all imprinted in history the absolute myth this soul, magnificent example of loneliness, power and freedom, [...] who didn't know for her own strength nothing but one empire and one kingdom: her inner life, and have pushed Her in a sphere governed by a higher existence, article which will be translated into German by Hofmannsthal and published in «Die Zukunft» on October 15th of that same year.

"An harmonious death in the appropriate hour ...". Weren't her pain and her dream as mature as the fruits of September she ate sitting on the rocks looking the beautiful water of the lake becoming pale? The destiny, who had lit with lightning so great lightnings the top of that lonely soul, treated her with an equally ardent and strong hand in the hour when it saw the need to remove her in full light and fix her in the memory of men by the crash of the unforeseen event.
It seemed it might be fulfilled a mystical vow.

And finally we should mention the commemoration made by Giovanni Pascoli, who recalls the figure of Elizabeth in the ode Nel Carcere di Ginevra, published for the first time on the «Minerva» of December 25th, 1898, with caustic and merciless tones for who has

wanted to be tyrant and evil!
because you took it away from some royal ax

the iron for your plebeian dagger.

vv.48-50, Nel carcere di Ginevra, Giovanni Pascoli

LUIGI LUCCHENI: PORTRAIT OF A POOR MARGINALISED.

Your hearth was the sorrow of the world,
oh homeless! You went forward, your dagger
tried, tried, with vagabond hate.

vv.51-53, Nel carcere di Ginevra, Giovanni Pascoli

Anyone who wonders himself about the nature of a man able to commit an act so heinous and on a person completely helpless and unable to harm, in any way, even politically, can only reach the conclusion that nothing can it be but deeply and radically evil and ria.
Yet, with extreme disbelief, I found myself reading, how, instead, it was worthy of every kind of admiration the person of Luigi Luccheni - murderer, in fact, of the Empress Elisabeth of Austria - up to two months - one month and a half before committing the crime that made him known in the world and pass, therefore, to history.

Born in Paris, of a mother who misunderstood him the first moment she saw him, and so whom he never knew, he never knew also who his father was; he grew up in an orphanage until was adopted by a very respectable family in Parma which gave him an education and an instruction even above the average (we shouldn't forget that illiteracy then was still reaching astonishing figures) and then, reached the age of the military service, he was drafted and adorned, for participating successfully in the African campaign, with a medal of valor.
Ended with honour the military he was employed as a waiter by Prince Ramero de Vera of Aragon in Palermo, his former cavalry commander who wanted him to remain by his side because he had appreciated his uncommon human qualities.
After a few months, probably driven by the need of creating a life of his own, Luccheni abandoned what had become his family and tried to look for a self-employment, having so often to settle for meager wages and almost always not enough to guarantee him a decent life which he was accustomed to, indeed, he had to get used to living often in poverty: he specialized as a laborer in the construction of driveways, bridges and railways, work that took him to Liguria, first, and then to Switzerland, where there was the higher demand for such type of manpower, but where, also, was delivered, without any difficulty, political asylum ... to anyone, even to the anarchists, revolutionary new disseminators of flyers and newspapers praising the absence of power promulgating grudge and hate towards anyone governing; during these months he kept alive the correspondence with the principles to which he felt he had used a gesture they didn't deserve abandoning them without giving them any justification.

It was probably fatal to Luccheni having crossed the Alps by the St. Bernard and moving through the soil beyond the Alps, where he began to be in contact with people of dubious reputation and with the reading of anarchist propaganda; probably prompted by what had become his social status, from being underpaid, from having to stay in dirty rooms without any form of sanitation in slums, it grew in him the anger and rejection to all forms of authority, the aversion towards those who hold power, those who govern, those who are in command, in short, he became a quarrelsome and an anarchist to all the effects.
"I wanted to hit the Prince of Orleans," he said as soon as he was captured a few minutes after the accident on the advice of some passers-by who had witnessed the scene, but he also knew that the prince had entertained at the Hotel de la Paix only one night, exactly on August 18th, to leave the city the next morning for Paris and that on September 10th he had completely abandoned the Swiss soil.
He had instead the firm intention of hitting the Empress to death, it's proved by the fact that the evening before, together with another man whose name nobody will ever know, had followed her movements

- picture 23 - The sadly famous last photo of Empress Elisabeth taken the day before her assassination.

and that the same day he sent to the Princess of Aragon in Palermo a postcard, telling her that he couldn't travel to Paris on the 10th, as he decided in the previous letter, because he would have to stay in Geneva. The most striking thing is that the postcard portrays the image of what would have become the place of the murder the very next day !

- picture 24

He did not know the names of people who lived close to him in Switzerland, but they were familiar with him, they had already spotted him as soon as saw him the first time as someone naive, easy to persuade - nicknamed the 'stupid' - and quick to act and for making a such an act extreme speed was essential.
The question arises: if the Empress was traveling incognito, under the name of Comtesse de Hohenembs and therefore moved safe and peacefully, how could Luccheni know that she was in Geneva and that housed at the Grand Hotel Beau Rivage?

Only on August 10th came the official notice of taking ready the apartments reserved to the Empress, whose arrival was scheduled for the 30th of the month. These data were communicated to the owner of the hotel via a dispatch from Bad Nauheim, written by marshal General von Berzewiczy. 7

Is it possible that Monsieur Faucherre ( Hotel Manager ) has comunicated this news to the press confirming the good name of his Hotel or that, in good faith, he has talked to someone who may have done the rest ?
Or it did someone making part of the staff reading or 'picking' a word 'said in half' or whispered, maybe for getting a reward ?
There was all the time for doing it and the fact is that they were in possession of the news of the arrival of the Empress those very people who wouldn't have known it.

Now she has peace, and you have not it: I hear you
moaning, oh son. And it arises a long echo
in the profound sleep to the tacit lament.

[...]

Oh in the motionless sleep shadows going!
I weep, my son, over your destiny;
I cry for it, because they won't kill you,

they'll let you live Cain!

vv.61-70, Nel carcere di Ginevra, Giovanni Pascoli

Luigi Luccheni was prosecuted in Geneva, for summary, October 16th, 1898 and sentenced to life imprisonment; he will die as suicide in jail on December 16th, 1900.
His body was never claimed.

- picture 25 - A reliquary made as a pendant made in memory of Empress Elisabeth of Austria's assassination, which contains by one side a piece of the cloth she was wearing when she was killed, on the other is engraved the date of hers death, the Imperial Crown with a mourning cross under it. It comes from the descendants of the sister of Elisabeth Sophie Charlotte, Duchess of Alençon, for whom the medallion was, at the time, made for.

And let me finally conclude this long, sad digression with the words of the dismayed Sztáray, remained incredulous 'orphan' for a soul that was light and she loved like a sister; just reassembled the imperial remains, after the autopsy which took place in the Empress's bedroom at the Beau Rivage, she paused to look at Her to whom she had linked her life, as in a vow ...

Looking again at her, I had the impression of seeing in front of me the noble goddess of affliction. her magnificent thin figure seemed even taller, her alabaster forehead was adorned with the heavy braids that seemed a dark and shiny crown, amongst her clasped hands there were a small mother-pearl crucifix and a rosary and, on her chest, a bouquet of white orchids covered the pierced heart of the lady as white as the snow. And so the white flowers had arrived at her!
I understood then what the orchids had told her! 8

The previous day they went to Pregny to visit the villa of Baroness Rothschild whose gardens enchanted the Empress, which, above all, returned in the greenhouses more than a time to observe a group of white orchids from which she felt particularly drawn as if they wanted to reveal her a message that she couldn't interpret ....)

A big thank to you, from my heart, to all of you,

see you soon
