Saturnia, Herald of the Beautiful Season, has eventually arrived!

They gave her a name filled with so much charm, she’s called ‘Saturnia’ as if she came from another planet to announce us the Beautiful Season coming, with its warmth and its beauty.
She’s one of the largest moths in the world - its wingspan reaches 15-17 cm. - and the largest at all we have in Italy.
With its 'eyes' painted on her wings that seem to scrutinize you if you approach her - made to chase away nocturnal predators - this wonderful butterfly, which moves only when cloaked in the white light of the moon, belongs to a family of moths not very common in Italy but that you can commonly find in tropical and subtropical countries, where large insects are diffused.
Just think that when she's flying at night she's so big to be confused with a bat!

Here at Tenuta Geremia we are lucky enough to have some rare specimens that every year come to visit us, first when they’re still caterpillar with their large blue-dotted body

and then, once they become butterflies, they stay with us for a few nights, waiting to be courted by the males to lay eggs and leave their memory for the next Spring: we see them from February to May, depending on the temperature trend. That's why this year they were late in coming: Spring was truly bizarre and characterized by unstable weather, but lately temperatures are rising little by little and the weather seems to be getting more stable day after day.
It is not a coincidence, in fact, that all the Spring blooms are late and even our roses, this year, have just begun to open their buds.

And then good Summer to all of you, my dear readers, in the hope that the Beautiful Season is delighting you too with its Beauty, its scents and its colours.

I hug you warmly, thanking You with all my heart, as usual,

see you soon

Saturnia, Messaggera della Bella Stagione, è finalmente arrivata!

 FOTO SATURNIA

Vi abbraccio caramente ringraziandovi come sempre,

a presto

      you're always far too welcome!
The first time I saw Saturnia's 'eyes' I was truly amazed at them, since I also had never seen something like that before!
And I'm amazed also if I think that every year she never fail to announce the arrival of the good season: Nature is truly the most wonderful Gift we have and we have the duty to preserve it with all its Magnificence.

  19. Happy summer to you Dany! The Saturnia moth is magnificent! It has been very hot where I live. WE are sadly breaking heat records and also have much wildfire smoke in our air this summer from distant wildfires. I am looking forward to fall and winter for those reasons, when the temperature gets cooler and the air is fresh again.

I’m sincerely sad after reading your words... here too is quite hot during these last days, but we’re fortunate to have many woods and trees around us, that’s why we breathe fresh air during the evening and early in the morning and at night our temperatures are very cool.
I’m sad for wildfires, they're the result of a far too hot season, alas, I do hope that during this month your Summer is getting less ‘aggressive’ and that September comes very soon!
I'm looking forward to your visits, sweet friend of mine, you always lift my spirits, thank you!
