Miss Lily Elsie, the first Franz Lehár's 'Merry Widow'.

( The Pelican 12 giugno 1907, pag. 6a.)

(The Times, 18 dicembre 1962, p. 13 )

A presto

Maybe because she distinguished herself on the most famous stages as the first great interpreter of the operetta 'The Merry Widow' by Franz Lehár, or maybe because of her impeccable elegance or rather for the good features which regularly drew her face so bright and graceful

- picture 1

so as to make her famous as one of the beauties of the early twentieth century, the thing is that Miss Lily Elsie was the most photographed woman in the Edwardian era.

- picture 2

- picture 3

Born in 1886 with the name of Elsie Hodder she owed her fame to the fact that she was chosen to play the title role of Franz Lehar's operetta The Merry WidowDie Lustige Witwe ) when in 1907 it was given the first in London in English, but she was used to play on the stage, because, as a prodigy child 'Little Elsie', as she was known then, began in 1890 with acting and singing in several Music-Halls; the success that was maturing with the flowing of the time when she became adult led her in 1900 to change her name by taking the artistic pseudonym of Lily Elsie.

- picture 4

She was at that time part of the theater company of George Edwardes at the Daily's Theatre as a chorus girl and for her vocal timbre she was given the lead role of Lehár's operetta which was gaining a great success in all of Central Europe; Edwardes decided therefore to conduct Lily in Berlin so that she could watch it in the original version, and, to be honest, she was reluctant at first, she didn't feel up to the task that was her required, she thought that her voice wasn't adequate to the role of the protagonist, but the theater manager was able to persuade her and brought her to Lucile, the most famous creator of costumes that London boasted during the Edwardian era, for she could dress her with her unmistakable style highlighting all the charm that this simple girl was keeping hidden.

- picture 5

She herself had to observe that "I realised that here was a girl who had both beauty and intelligence but who had never learnt how to make the best of herself. So shy and diffident was she in those days that a less astute producer than George Edwardes would in all probability have passed her over and left her in the chorus."

- picture 6

The production, with English lyrics by Adrian Ross began to Daily's Theatre in June 1907 and went on for 778 performances ( King Edward, the English king in person, couldn't miss at least four of them ); the character that Lily gave birth to lead the companyto organize a tour from August of the following year and collected a success of such greatness as to make of her a real, big star.

- picture 7

The opening Night a critic sent by The Pelican and wrote "the youthfulness, the dainty charm and grace, the prettiness and the exquisite dancing with which Miss Elsie invests the part.... I share the opinion of most of the first-nighters, who considered it could not have been in better hands, and could not have been better handled.... The night was a genuine triumph for Miss Elsie, and she well deserved all the calls she received."

And yet we read an excerpt from The Atlanta Constitution newspaper in America that wrote on November 21, 1915:

"Perhaps her face is nearer to that of the Venus de Milo in profile than to any other famed beauty.

- picture 8

There are no angles to be found about her any place.... If she came to America, she would undoubtedly be called the most beautiful woman in America. Nature never made a more brilliant success in the beauty business than she did with Lily Elsie. It was mostly from the nobility that her suitors came. Everyone agrees that Lily Elsie has the most kissable mouth in all England... she possesses the Cupid's bow outline with the ends curving upward delicately, all ready for smiles.... Strangely enough, the women of the land were among her most devoted admirers."

After The Merry Widow, Lily Elsie appeared in other 16 shows, always in English versions, of great success such as The Dollar Princess of 1909, in the role of Franzi in A Waltz Dream in 1911, and in the guise of the beautiful Angèle in The Count of Luxembourg , again in 1911, achieving continuous praise.

(For those unfamiliar with the tunes of Die Lustige Witwe or having them not in mind at the moment here it is just a mix of the first edition of the year 1907 with the wonderful 'defects' of sound that the thumbtack of the gramophone let us hear while it reads the vinyl record!)

She left the cast of The Count of Luxembourg to join in marriage with Major Ian John Bullough, son of a wealthy textile manufacturer, but it will became  such an unhappy union whic led to divorce in 1930: too different were the two worlds  which the spouses belonged to, Lily wasn't suitable for the life of the high society and, indeed, felt the lack of the stage.
Affected by time from emotional, psychological and psychic disorders (also underwent a brain surgery that they say brought a slight improvement to her illness) she spent the rest of her life in nursing homes and sanatoriums in Switzerland specialized in mental illnesses and died at age 76 at the St Andrew's Hospital in London.
On that occasion, a great critic of The Times concluded his obituary writing that

"it gave great pleasure merely to see her walk across the stage." (The Times, December 18, 1962, p. 13)

Unfortunately this is not a tale with a happy ending, not at all, but often what in reality begins as a tale ends sadly, the tales, the real ones, remain enclosed amongst the pages of books, waiting for those who want to read them, and never they come out, probably they don't like our world which isn't made for them and isn't worthy of them; and let me conclude with one last quote to pay once again a tribute to the rare beauty that made Miss Lily Elsie so famous and celebrated:

- picture 14

The Chicago Examiner wrote of her on May 1st, 1910:

She is famous above all for two things –
for having been photographed more frequently than any actress ever on a London stage, and for having had more proposals of marriage. It is said that she has been photographed at least once every week day in the year. Even then the insatiable demands of the photographic firms were not satisfied. They could not obtain enough of her photographs to supply the enormous demand.

And finally for those who wish to listen to the sweet notes of Lily Elsie's voice, I propose here a brief excerpt of an interpretation of hers dated 1918.

Glad to have made known you a so pretty face which almost rejoice the heart, it comes to you, filled with joy, my most affectionate greeting.

See you soon

Paola

mia cara, buongiorno e buona domenica a te !
