Era il 1869 quando Blanchard Jerrold, giornalista, scrittore ed autore di canovacci per il teatro, volle al suo fianco Gustave Doré, al tempo il più famoso e ricercato illustratore, perché compisse con lui una sorta di 'pellegrinaggio' per le strade di Londra al fine di illustrare come vivevano le persone appartenenti ai ceti più umili e disagiati, capaci d'inventarsi qualsiasi mestiere pur di sbarcare il lunario, coloro che rendevano così animata e brulicante di vita già di primo mattino la capitale inglese, sulle orme del già pubblicato volume The Microcosm of London, illustrato da Thomas Rowalndson e che stava riscuotendo un discreto successo; ebbene, immaginiamo oggi di essere insieme a loro e percorriamo,con queste due guide d'eccezione, le vie di Londra durante il periodo d'oro dell'epoca vittoriana ... seguitemi, vi faccio strada !
Venite, se acceleriamo il passo riusciamo a prendere una carrozza che sosta vicino il marciapiede e sembra attendere proprio noi mentre il cocchiere si sta intrattenendo in una conversazione con un passante ...
Durante il periodo vittoriano le vie della città erano animate da persone molto umili che cercavano in ogni modo di mettere a disposizione degli altri le loro abilità per guadagnarsi ciò che era loro necessario per sostentarsi, giorno per giorno, si accontentavano di vivere alla giornata senza pensare al domani ...
... ecco, guardate, il primo che incontriamo è un signore seduto vicino le finestre della cucina di questa dimora che sembra sapere riparare qualsiasi cosa, dagli ombrelli, alle sedie della cucina, sicuramente per pochi scellini ... si tratta di una persona ben nota a tutti, Caney il Clown, il quale da che i suoi notevoli sforzi per soddisfare Stepney Fair gli procurò lo scoppio di una vena varicosa in una gamba, mutò mestiere e si specializzò soprattutto nel rammendo del setto in paglia delle sedie porta-a-porta.
Ed osservate, quell'uomo che alla guida del suo fedele cavallo guida lasso il suo carro girando per le vie: 
si tratta del WATER CART , colui che distribuisce l'acqua alle case che ancora non la hanno corrente con un notevole guadagno, sappiamo quanto sia preziosa l'acqua e quanto fosse necessaria la presenza di una persona che ne consentisse l'approvvigionamento nelle città ( Gustave Dorè ritrasse anche la venditrice ambulante di latte, THE MILKWOMAN, ma immaginate con quale fatica doveva muoversi da una via all'altra per portare la sua preziosa merce proveniente dalle campagne del circondario !)
e poi quanto sono romantici quei fanciulli italiani che suonano ai bordi della strada !
Ci stiamo approssimando ad un'altra figura romantica che attende turisti negli angoli più pittoreschi di parchi e giardini, THE ITINERANT PHOTOGRAPHER che immortala attimi indimenticabili in cartoline da conservare quale souvenir;
... ma ci pensate, farsi curare da una persona sconosciuta, e chissà se e quanto qualificata, THE STREET DOCTOR, che viaggia di città in città, di paese in paese proponendo farmaci miracolosi pressoché sconosciuti in grado di curare qualsiasi malattia ... eppure nel periodo vittoriano anche questa figura appartiene alla consuetudini della vita di ogni giorno;
Sembra lavorare molto anche il fabbro o arrotino di strada, THE STREET BLACKSMITH, cui ciascuno porta forbici e coltelli da affilare e possiede qualsiasi oggetto in ferro, soprattutto chiavi e catene che costituivano le serrature Vittoriane.
Ma seguitemi con lo sguardo, dall'altro capo della strada ecco svoltare l'angolo una figura così tanto pittoresca e forse colui che possedeva il mestiere che più di tutti fruttava denaro, un 'nerissimo' spazzacamino, THE CHIMNEY SWEEPER, impegnatissimo nel suo vagare da una casa all'altra per nettare le canne fumarie di poveri e ricchi perché funzionassero adeguatamente i sistemi di riscaldamento e le stufe per cucinare ...
E che ne dite di quelle signore che sul marciapiede di St Giles vendono abiti usati esponendoli appesi a muro, sono THE OLD CLOTHES SELLERS ... quanti mestieri che sono scomparsi, ai nostri giorni ....
ed accanto a loro ha trovato posto quel delizioso fanciullo, che guadagna qualche moneta lustrando le scarpe dei signori, THE INDEPENDENT BOOTBLACK, impegnatissimo ed osservato da molti passanti incuriositi, chissà se dalla professionalità che palesa facendo il suo lavoro o piuttosto dall'eleganza dal Gentleman che ne ha richiesto l'abilità ...
Ed ancora osservate nel mezzo della piazza il giovanissimo venditore di pesci, THE CHEAP FISH SELLER, con il suo banchetto ... non lo trovate delizioso e tenerissimo ?!
Ma sì, nel mezzo della piazza hanno trovato posto tutti coloro che vendono generi alimentari,
i venditori di fragole appena raccolte nelle campagne circostanti Londra, THE STRAWBERRY SELLERS

il venditore di patate cotte - THE BAKED POTATOES SELLER, ( qui lo vediamo immortalato da Gustave Dorè )
e quello di molluschi che, analogamente alle ostriche - di cui ho già avuto occasione di parlarvi - erano talmente a buon mercato da essere considerate il cibo per i poveri perchè univano alla convenienza la ricchezza proteica ... eccolo, THE SHELLFISH SELLER ...
ma, se vedo bene ci sono tavoli e seggiole, per cui si possono gustare direttamente seduti al banco, come uno spuntino da tavola calda !
E poteva secondo voi , tra gli altri, mancare la romantica venditrice di Violette
Oh, no, che peccato, il vetturino mi sta facendo cenno con il capo che il nostro viaggio si conclude qui .... ma non temete, potete comunque compierne uno del tutto analogo ogni qualvolta lo desideriate sfogliando le pagine di LONDON: A PILGRIMAGE

Well, let's imagine today to be with them and walk with these two exceptional guides, amongst the streets of London during the heyday of the Victorian era ... follow me, I lead the way !

Come on, if we speed up we can take a carriage which is stopping near the sidewalk and it seems just waiting for us while the coachman is entertaining himself in a conversation with a passerby ...

During the Victorian period the streets were alive with very humble people who were trying in every way to make available to others their ability to earn what was needed to sustain them and their large family day-to-day, they were content to live for the day without thinking about tomorrow ...

... Here, look, the first we meet is a man sitting near the kitchen windows of this house who seems to know how to fix everything from umbrellas, to the kitchen chairs, certainly for a few shillings ... it is a person well known to everybody, his name's Caney the Clown, who by the considerable efforts for Stepney Fair brought him the outbreak of a varicose vein in the leg, and so changed profession specializing himself mainly in the mending chairs septal straw door-to -door.
And have a look at the man driving his faithful horse and his carriage wandering the streets:

it is the WATER CART and distributes water to every home, cause they do not have still it currently, with a significant gain, we know how precious water is and how much necessary it was to have a person that would allow this kind of supply in the cities (Gustave Dore also portrayed THE MILKWOMAN, but imagine, how hard it was for her to move from one street to another to bring her precious good from the countryside of the district!)

and then how romantic those Italian children playing on the roadside are !

We are approaching another romantic figure that waits for tourists in the most picturesque parks and gardens of London, THE ITINERANT PHOTOGRAPHER that captures unforgettable moments in postcards to keep home as souvenirs;

It is so strange to us thinking of accept farmacological treatments from an unknown person, and I wonder if and how qualified, THE STREET DOCTOR, who travels from town to town, from village to village offering virtually miracle drugs able to heal any disease ... well, in Victorian times this carachter belongs to habits of everyday life;

He seems to work quite a lot THE STREET BACKSMITH too, to whom each one carries scissors and knives which have to be sharpened and has any kind of object in iron, especially keys and chains that were the Victorian locks.

But follow me with your eyes, and look just on the other side of the road where is just turning the corner a figure so picturesque and perhaps the one who had the job that most of all made money, a 'very dark' THE CHIMNEY SWEEPER, busy in his wanderings from house to house to clean the flues of the heating systems and of the stoves for cooking for they could work properly belonging both to rich and to poor people ...

And how about those ladies on the sidewalk of St Giles, THE OLD CLOTHES SELLERS, selling used clothes all exposed hanging on the walls ... how many jobs that have disappeared nowadays ....

and next to them has found a place that delightful child, earning a few coins glazing shoes of lords, THE INDEPENDENT BOTBLACK, busy and viewed by many curious passers, I wonder if caught by the professionalism revealed by his work or rather by the elegant Gentleman who has requested his ability ...

And still let's observ in the middle of the square THE CHEAP FISH SELLER, so very young, with its banquet ... don't you think him to be delightful and tender ?!

But yes, in the middle of the square have found their place all those selling food,

THE STRAWBERRY SELLERS, selling fresh strawberries just picked up in the countryside surrounding London,

and THE SHELLFISH SELLER for shellfishes, like oysters - which I have already had occasion to talk to you about - were as much cheap, as to be considered food for the poor, as much rich in proteins ...

but, if I'm not misteken there are tables and chairs around his stall, so you can enjoy them just sitting there as a snack at a hot table !
And you think that could, among all the others, be absent the romantic woman selling violets ?

Oh, no, it truly makes me sad, the coachman is doing me nod with his head to comunicate that our journey is ending here .... but don't worry, you can have another entirely analogous whenever you wish through the pages of LONDON: A PILGRIMAGE
