Candor and simplicity on the canvases of Wilhelm Schütze

 

A GIRL AT A WINDOW

It's not far easy to collect news about this German painter's life: it's truly known very little about him, although his artworks are still appreciated today as much as, whether sold in auctions, they are quite expensive.

We know that Wilhelm Schütze was born in Bavaria, to be more precise in Kaufbeuren, on July 19th, 1840, and that his father was a toolsmith. At the age of 18 he went to the the Munich Academy of Fine Arts where he was accepted into antiquities class. In fact his paintings seems to belong to a previous era and probably looked like dating back in time already when they were new. After graduating, he settled himself in Munich and worked as an artist becoming a "genre paintiner".

This definition is used to qualify paintings depicting scenes of everyday life, of people working or living their ordinary lives caught in a moment of their action, as nowadays we are able to do with a camera.

The main subjects of his paintings are children, or groups of people in childlike attitudes, depicted in the country, while working or spending time outdoor, or in their humble homes - in this case we may appreciate paesant scenes. But Schütze was also captured by the life that took place in the court, and so we find in his paintings evocative scenes that take us back in time to the 18th century. His palette is caracherized by warm and muted colours, which lead us to think that, though belonging to the Munich school, he was influenced by the Viennese one. Schütze's paintings are preserved and shown in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich and the Chemnitz Municipal Art Collection, Saxony.

Il candore e la semplicità nelle tele di 

Wilhelm Schütze

Non è facile raccogliere notizie sulla vita di questo pittore tedesco: si sa davvero molto poco di lui, sebbene le sue opere siano ancora oggi apprezzate e, se vendute all'asta, siano piuttosto costose.

Sappiamo che Wilhelm Schütze nacque in Baviera, più precisamente a Kaufbeuren, il 19 luglio 1840, e che suo padre era un fabbro. All'età di 18 anni frequentò l'Accademia di Belle Arti di Monaco, dove fu ammesso al corso di antichità.

In effetti, i suoi dipinti sembrano appartenere a un'epoca precedente e probabilmente sembravano risalire a tempi lontani già quando erano nuovi. Dopo la laurea, si stabilì a Monaco e lavorò come artista, diventando un "pittore di genere".

Questa definizione viene utilizzata per qualificare dipinti che raffigurano scene di vita quotidiana, di persone che lavorano o vivono la loro vita ordinaria, colte in un momento della loro azione, come oggi siamo in grado di fare con una macchina fotografica. I soggetti principali dei suoi dipinti sono bambini, o gruppi di umili persone in atteggiamenti infantili, raffigurati in campagna, mentre lavorano all'aperto o in attività di svago, oppure nelle loro modeste - in questo caso possiamo apprezzare scene contadine. Ma Schütze era anche attirato dalla vita che si svolgeva gli ambienti di Corte, ed allora ecco che ritroviamo nelle sue tele scene suggestive che ci riportano indietro nel tempo fino al XVIII secolo.

La sua tavolozza è caratterizzata da colori caldi e tenui, il che ci porta a pensare che, pur appartenendo alla scuola monacense, abbia subito l'influenza di quella viennese.

I dipinti di Schütze sono conservati ed esposti nella Neue Pinakothek di Monaco di Baviera e nella Collezione d'arte comunale di Chemnitz, in Sassonia.
