O felice natura!

Spesso a bordo del battello Phantasie, un piroscafo a ruote fatto costruire appositamente in Inghilterra da Massimiliano, trascorrevano intere giornate sulle acque del mare, il cui ricordo è riportato nelle immagini fissate sulla tela dal pennello della Principessa Carlotta in questi dipinti che ritraggono il Golfo di Trieste, le coste della Dalmazia e dell'Istria;

A presto

Dany

The Castle of Miramare, apotheosis of the Maximilian of Habsburg's artistic talent.

O happy nature! I don't know to give an account of what happens in me when I raise the
look to your beauty, but all the joys of heaven are in the tears that I shed for
your beauty, like the lover to his beloved.
My whole being silenced and listens when the gentle waves of the wind
play around my chest. Lost in the wide blue sky, I raise my gaze up at

the etra and down towards the sea and sacred seems to me that a fraternal spirit, I open my arms and that the
pain of loneliness melts in the life of the Godhead.
Being one with everything, this is the life of the gods, this is heaven for man.
Be one with all that lives and come back in a happy forgetfulness of oneselves, to
all of nature, this is the highest point of thought and joy, is the sacred summit of the mountain,
is the place of eternal calm, where the noonday loses its sultry, thunder his voice and the sea
quivers and foams resembles to the waves of a wheat field.

J.C.FRIEDRICH HÖLDERLIN (1770 - 1843), Hyperion oder der Eremit in Griechenland, Hyperion, 1799.

A pearl, of a snowy whiteness, of the waters of the sea like Aphrodite daughter, chosen by Neptune and placed on the cliff, so that everyone, from the sea, could admire it and like one of the of Ulysses's syrens everyone could enchant; Maximilian of Habsburg made it a castle,

great expression of the eclectic style prevailing in the second half of the XIX th century, seal of the marriage of the House of Austria with the waters of the sea and of his love for the sweet Charlotte, the beloved wife with whom he shared artistic aspirations artistic and aesthetic sense; Miramar is its  name derived from the Spanish "mirar el mar", as he was inspired by the memory of castles from the South American coast overlooking the the Atlantic Ocean.

Imposing, austere, sublime, stately expression of the historical period in which the Habsburgs found their greatest triumph it dominates, since 1859, the Gulf of Grignano and patiently, since then, observes the waters of the Adriatic winding at its feet and lapping its ramparts to cover the entire eastern side of the peninsula; this sea of ours is familiar to me, where, at the shores of Ferrara and Ravenna, the coast runs low and sandy, but for the first time my eyes wander over this rocky shore, although honestly, I think it is already known, as it brings me back to the Ligurian cliffs on which I was born, cliffs sudden plunge straight into the sea .. and also the castle is quite familiar to me, as with my mind I run to the images of Castello Raggio whose structure, in the shape of a parallelepiped with a quadrangular tower which flanked the main body, a few years later, will intentionally match its appearance in a position, the Ligurian Gulf, almost mirror-like to it ...

those images that, with veiled melancholy, my grandparents, who, at the beach and the gardens of the castle, had tied the memories of their childhood and their youth, showed to me as a child (severely damaged during the Second World War Castello raggio will be demolished on 14 April 1951 to make way for the steel plant Oscar Sinigaglia and the airport Cristoforo Colombo).

Of all the four sons of Archduke Francis Charles of Habsburg-Lorraine and Archduchess Sophie of Bavaria (Franz Joseph, Crown Prince, Ferdinand Maximilian said Max, Charles Louis and Louis Victor)  Massimiliano

was certainly the most gifted in terms of remarkable intelligence, artistic sensitivity, propensity towards literature and science, especially botany; a cruise accomplished at young age in the eastern Mediterranean would also revealed him his passion for the sea to which he decided to devote his life pursuing a military career in the Austrian Navy covering early assignments of high degree.

- picture 7

With very liberal ideas, he was sent in 1857 to replace Marshal Radetzky in Lombardy-Venetia, stifled for years by a government strictly despotic, as Viceroy and in July of the same year he married in Brussels Princess Charlotte of Belgium,

daughter of King Leopold I, with whom he lived in Milan and in Monza by Villa Reale, as Austrian regent, until 1859 when he was discharged. Maximilian and Carlotta retired then to private life staying mainly in Trieste.
According to the tradition, former admiral in the Austrian Navy Maximilian had found, during a stormy night, a refuge among the rocks of these shores and the next morning he woke up and discovering the triumph of the wild, almost primordial nature: his sensitivity of artist, scholar, poet would have been shocked and inspired by the point to make him choose this gulf to build what was to become the official residence of the couple of Habsburg Archduke.
Then, purchased between 1855 and 1856 twenty-two acres of karst ridge completely devoid of vegetation, Maximilian had to first undertake a reclamation project intending as first to create a Mediterranean garden: relied on the experience of the Viennese architect Karl Junker, formerly in charge of design the castle, and on that of the Bohemian gardener already in his service in the residence of Laxenberg Josef Laube, saw this first attempt failing due to the harsh climate of the winters of Trieste aggravated by the bora; in 1859 hired a new gardener, Anton Eliken who proposed to opt for exotic species, also of prestige, coming from the Far East, from Africa, North America, Mexico, and the result was what we can still observe, the manifestation of how much solemn, disruptive beauty the nature, also shaped by man, can show to our eyes.

The passion with which Maximilian lived this project led him to follow its realization step by step and here, in what became a noble manor

the couple spent their happiest years, between 1860 and 1864.

Often on the Phantasie, a paddle steamer made built specially in England by Maximilian, they spent entire days on the waters of the sea, the memory of which is shown in the images attached on the canvas by Princess Charlotte's brush in these paintings of the Gulf of Trieste, the coasts of Dalmatia and Istria;

Often hosts of visit by members of the imperial family who appreciated its amenities, we find Miramar in vintage photographs and paintings:

In 1864, although against the will of his brother Franz Joseph, but following rather the invitation of Napoleon III who told him to take interest to the imperial crown of Mexico in order to revive the fortunes of a greatly troubled country, Massimiliano accepted in one of the rooms of the castle the aforementioned crown by a Mexican delegation; strong of the aids promised by Pope Pio IX, Napoleon III and Leopold I, after having given up all his rights of the crown of Austria, Maximilian left with his wife Miramare Castle to Santa Cruz on April 14, 1864 ...

And if with Hölderlin's verses I chose to begin this dialogue of ours to express the sublimity of nature as it shows itself in this fabolous place, again to his words I rely on to take leave of you  :

during my hectic days, when I feel ... "inspired" (let me say in this way !!!! ), I take a note and put it into my pocket, and, as soon as I can, I sit at my table inside my verandah, among my plants, and begin to write .. of course, I cannot give in to this temptation whenever I want, there are so many things coming before for their importance .. I generally devote to posts the late evening, but when I begin to write, you know, I can hardly stop myself !
Your words always fill my heart with lot of joy and enthusiasm, they're so important, believe me, and I'll never be able to thank you enough for this !!
A wonderful week to you too my sweet friend ♥♥

I don't know how many years have I been intending to visit it!
The fact is that I thought it was very far away from here, in fact, indeed, it's pretty close!
We also had the good fortune to find a beautiful day with a calm sea which helped to give a special touch to the photos .. Well, the sea is something fantastic and incomparable.
Anyway, the fact remains that Maximilian of Habsburg had an artistic intuition to put together the sea in that point of the Gulf of Trieste, a suitable vegetation and a construction of an indescribable amenity, you're right!
A happy weekend to you and thanks for coming ❧

when we left home early in the morning the weather was quite cloudy and it remained cloudy till we arrived to Trieste .. then, in less than a hour, a warm sun has made space among the clouds and it became a truly wonderful late summer day so that this place has revealed itself in all its magic !
I will always remember that Sunday and take it inside my heart .. I suppose that the town, that we hadn't time enough to visit, with its still recent Habsburg past and atmosphere, has to be really fascinating too.
I'm sure you're carrying with you lovely remembrances of these places ...
