Blists Hill Victorian Town

Today I'm taking you to a place that will amaze you with its uniqueness:
it is an almost surreal place where time seems to have stopped in the Victorian age. Its name is Blists Hill Victorian Town. It is an open-air museum built on a former industrial complex located close to the the Ironbridge Gorge near Telford, Shropshire, England, which recreates an English Victorian town of the late 19th century.

Carriages, traditional costumes, and ancient recipes: Blists Hill Victorian Town is one of the most fascinating living museums in the world, where you can discover what life was like in the late Victorian age.
This town-museum is a true celebration of the history of the former Victorian industrial area and was opened on April 1, 1973, with the aim of recreating the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of Victorian life, with iconic characters in traditional cottages, shops, and workplaces. Since then, it has continued to expand, attracting countless visitors from around the world each year.
Blists Hills Town extends over 54 acres, to be explored on foot or in a carriage "driven" by the horse George, moving, like in a daydream, among people dressed in period clothing and speaking a slightly old-fashioned, now obsolete English, the one spoken in the late 1800s. The first thing to do is to enter the bank, which is the first building on the left,

to change your currency into Victorian pennies,

and to begin, thus your journey back in time, admiring the shop windows and the shops inside filled with goodies,

objects Victorians were used to use,

and details we generally don't see anymore.

And here, with your own Victorian money, you can buy watever it is on sale inside the shops!

THE BUTCHER

THE CHEMIST

You can get in touch with crafts nowadays we cannot even imagine they existed, and to know how people went about their work...

THE PLASTERS MAKER

THE CANDLES MAKER

THE BOOTS AND SHOES MAKER

THE LACE-MAKER

THE BACK ROOM OF THE STATIONERY

THE TAILOR

While you walk, you happen to come across the staff walking the street and manning the shops, with dresses you've seen only in period dramas...

The village is divided into three main districts (town, industrial and rural) all to discover and enjoy. You can also visit the mines, the Shropshire Canal, an important navigable waterway in the United Kingdom, and the Hay Inclined Plane, a historic engineering structure from 1793 that was used to transport boats loaded with coal and iron up a 63-meter drop. Each building is staffed by one or more actors specialized in the work in question and also in the customs and traditions of the period.
And you're allowed to enter, visit and have a chat with people "living" inside their cottages welcoming you...

Oh, I was forgetting to tell you that in Blists Hill Village there's also a school — obviously, the Cotteridge Primary School,

and the doctor's studio.

And even a Victorian Fair!

Without any doubt, this is an amazing place indeed!

With sincere thankfulness
for accompanying me on this journey back in time,
living a real Victorian day,
I'm wishing You all a blessed week
See you soon

Dany

Blists Hill Victorian Town

A presto ❤

  1. It is astounding to think that as apart of the human experience on Earth this is a mere blink of an eye away. The changes that have occurred since then are staggering - and not all for the better. Enjoy the week ahead. Best wishes - David

    1. David,
You're so right, my friend, so many changes occurred in men's lives and so fast, and the thing is thet everything is going on changing even faster, alas, we have not even the time to get suited to something new that it's already obsolete : as for technology, for example, I'm thinking of smartphones, computers, and so on.
In the days of Blists Hill Village there were not even telephones in the cottages - this was a very useful invention indeed!
Thanking you so much for this visit of yours,
I wish you a wonderful rest of your holiday ❤

    1. Linda's Relaxing Lair,
You said it, it's truly a jump back in time, but people can make it for real, not while reading a book, watching a period drama on TV or leafing through a magazine with vintage photos: this may happen for real if you happen to go to Blists Hill Village Town. I think than English people had such a wondrous idea by giving back life to such a place, I wonder how many people dovisit it every year.
Sending my dearest hug to you, sweet Friend,

  14. Blist Hills Victorian Village Museum is very charming, Dany! I would love to visit it one day. There is a village museum in a part of Colorado called South Park City Museum that one can walk around and re-live the early gold mine era, but I'm not sure if they have re-enactors in costume there. The buildings in that museum were all actual buildings from the 1850s that were saved and moved to the museum.

    1. Pat,
Dearest One, I'm so glad to welcome you today, your visits always bless my day!
I suppose that South Park City Museum in your wonderful Colorado is worth a visit although without re-enactors, as it's an open-air museum that preserves and recreates historic buildings from the area's Gold mining past, it should be very interesting and suggestive!
With heartfelt gratitude for this visit of yours,
I'm sending you my best wishes for a Happy and Blessed Easter 💕
