Jack Frost, a story for the Season

Ladies' Home Journal, "Jack Frost" (1926) by Oliver Herford

Jacky Gelo, Jacky Gelo,
È arrivato nella notte;

Jacky Gelo, Jacky Gelo,
Si è infiltrato intorno alla casa,
Scaltro come una volpe d'argento,
O piuttosto come un topo.
La nostra piccola Jenny è arrivata,
Tutta rossa come una rosa;
E Jacky Gelo è saltato su,
Per pizzicare anche il suo piccolo naso.

Jack Frost by Arthur Rackham (1867 - 1939)

Jacky Frost, Jacky Frost,
Came in the night;
Left the meadows that he crossed,
All gleaming white.
Painted with his silver brush
Every window-pane.
Kissed the leaves and made them blush,
Blush and blush again.

Jacky Frost, Jacky Frost,
Crept around the house,
Sly as a silver fox,
Still as a mouse.
Out our little Jenny came,
Blushing like a rose;
Up jumped Jacky Frost,
And pinched her little nose.

Attenzione! Attenzione!
Jack Frost è arrivato!
E dopo aver lavorato le nostre mani e i nostri piedi;

Look out! Look out!
Jack Frost is about!
He's after our fingers and toes;
And all through the night,
The gay little sprite
Is working where nobody knows.

He'll climb each tree,
So nimble is he,
His silvery powder he'll shake.
To windows he'll creep
And while we're asleep
Such wonderful pictures he'll make.

Across the grass
He'll merrily pass,
And change all its greenness to white.
Then home he will go
And laugh ho, ho ho!
What fun I have had in the night.

"Aha!" disse Jack Frost: "Non è bello ora?"
E subito tramutò l'acqua in ghiaccio.

A pretty brook was running at play
With little Jack Frost on a cold winter's day.
It stopped to rest at the foot of a hill
Making a pond all quiet and still.
"Aha!" said Jack Frost, "Now isn't that nice?"
And quickly he turned the water to ice.

❆ ❅ ❆ ❅ ❆ ❅ ❆ ❅ ❆ ❅ ❆ ❅ ❆ ❅ ❆

Quando sussurrò: "Ora non mi mostrerò;

Così volò per la montagna, e impolverò la sua vetta;

E sopra ogni vetro, come una creatura fatata, avanzò furtivamente;
Ovunque respirò, ovunque si fermò,
Con la luce della mattina apparvero

Le cose più belle; c'erano fiori e alberi;
C'erano stormi di uccelli e sciami di api;
Tutto disegnato in riflessi argentei!

"Questa costosa brocca, la spezzo in tre;

Rappresentazione del secolo scorso di Padre Gelo

The Frost looked forth one still, clear night,
And whispered, "Now I shall be out of sight;
So, through the valley, and over the height,
In silence I'll take my way.

I will not go on like that blustering train,
The wind and the snow, the hail and the rain,
That make such a bustle and noise in vain,
But I'll be as busy as they!"

So he flew to the mountain, and powdered its crest;
He lit on the trees, and their boughs he drest
With diamonds and pearls; and over the breast
Of the quivering lake he spread

A coat of mail, that it need not fear
The downward point of many a spear
That he hung on its margin, far and near,
Where a rock could rear its head.

He went to the windows of those who slept,
And over each pane, like a fairy, crept;
Wherever he breathed, wherever he stepped,
By the light of the morn were seen

Most beautiful things; there were flowers and trees;
There were bevies of birds and swarms of bees;
There were cities with temples and towers; and these
All pictured in silvery sheen!

But he did one thing that was hardly fair-
He peeped in the cupboard, and finding there
That all had forgotten for him to prepare-
"Now, just to set them a-thinking,

I'll bite this basket of fruit," said he,
"This costly pitcher I'll burst in three;
And the glass of water they've left for me
Shall ‘tchick' to tell them I'm drinking!"

A presto, miei cari

Jack Frost is an elfish character dating back to the Norse, or Norse-Viking mythology, also known as "Jokul Frosti", whom in England and in the United States is seen as the allegorical representation of Winter: also known as Father Winter he is held responsible for the freezing weather and all its features, since the falling of the leaves from the trees in Autumn ( Fall ) that heralds his coming.

- picture 1 - Ladies' Home Journal, "Jack Frost" (1926) by Oliver Herford

He prepares the favorable weather conditions for the arrival of Santa Claus, of whom is a friend and an ally, since he is responsible for the fact that we never can see him, is carrier of the cold wind, frost, author of the embroidery, often shaped fern leaf, which, with its silvery brush, he paints outside of the glass of our windows during the coldest nights of the year; he makes us freeze our nose, our hands and our feet during our outdoor walk during this time that belong to him, since the first days of December to the beginning of Spring - when, before leaving us, he greets us creating tiny mirrors inside water puddles through which we can see our reflection - he has fun scattering snowflakes and frost hopping through woods, meadows and houses at the roofs of which he often hangs artistic icicles.

Relative of God Frost, Jack Frost is often cheerful and loves to give the world his wintry arts,  has a friendly character, but when provoked can also come to freeze or cover with snow his 'victims'; another activity  ascribed to him by the literature is to freeze the shadows separating them from the bodies that project them and giving them their own autonomy.
Also known in Russia, where the cold reigns as a sovereign for most of the year, with the name of Father Frost, represented as an old white man, he's protagonist in several remote fables and legends.
Here I like to tell you some nursery rhymes, the most famous and the oldest ones, of Anglo-Saxon origin, along with images belonging to the beginning of the last century.

( As for the nursery rhymes, I thought it to be nicer to you to read them in your own language under Jack Frost's pictures I've chosen, so you should scroll up the page until the images I've posted.)

Here, Jack Frost has already arrived and has began to amuse himself spreading a bit of hoar, especially during last nights ... I wonder if you've already seen traces of his coming ...

I embrace you all with much love in the hope that he'll come soon, if he hasn't arrived yet, and that he comes in time for the descent of Santa Claus ...

See you soon, my dears

      thank you for blessing my Blog with your light and your precious words, my dearie !
      Truth is that Jack is really an artist, he's able to make such kinds of embroidery on the leaves and among the grass that no human hand can do, neither the most capable who's ever lived, believe me, sometimes, when the early morning is very, very cold, with a big scarf and my hat i go out and have a walk, just to watch the amazing things he has done while we were sleeping, it's a pity that's when it's so very cold I cannot use my camera to take some shots, I have a digital camera which suffers cold, alas !

      ஐ With so much gratitude and esteem I wish a most beautiful remainder of your Sunday,
