Petrus van Schendel's paintings and the atmosphere 'By Candlelight'.

Forse perché della fatal quïete
Tu sei l’immago a me sì cara, vieni,
O Sera! E quando ti corteggian liete
Le nubi estive e i zeffiri sereni,

E quando dal nevoso aere inquiete
    Tenebre, e lunghe, all’universo meni,
Sempre scendi invocata, e le secrete
Vie del mio cor soavemente tieni.

Vagar mi fai co’ miei pensier su l’orme

Delle cure, onde meco egli si strugge;

Saying Grace

Before the Ball

A Summer Evening by Candle and Moonlight

Perhaps because of the fatal quiet you're the imagine
you come to me so dear,
Oh Evening! And when the happy summer clouds
and the calm breezes woo you,

And when from the snowy air restless
Darkness, and long, to the universe you move,
always you descend invoked,
and the secret paths of my heart gently hold.

You make me wander with my thoughts on the footsteps
Leading to the eternal nothingness; and meanwhile it flees
This guilty time, and with it go away the torments

Of the cares, about which it, by me, pines ;
And while I look at your peace, it sleeps
That warrior spirit roaring in my deep.

In the evening ( Orig. title Alla sera ), Ugo Foscolo, sonnet of 1803

Born on April 21st, 1806 into a family of farmers-merchants in the village of Terheyden, near Breda - North Brabant - Petrus van Schendel showed his drawing skills already when he was a child; in 1822 he moved with his family to Antwerp, where he cultivated this attitude of his at the Academy of Fine Arts  and where was educated as a painter of history, and it was then that he discovered, quite suddenly, looking at a convex mirror, the potential of scenes shrouded in candlelight: from then on, he decided to paint almost exclusively nocturnal scenes in which the protagonist was the light produced by a candle, often in combination with other artificial light sources such as fires, the light of a lamp or that of the torches.

- picture 2 on the left - At the same year, when he had just completed his studies, dates back a self-portrait inspired to the chiaroscuro techniques of the Old Masters, in which he was able to make fully emerge this exceptional talent that will made him define by the critics of his own time 'the master of light and atmosphere '(later he'll enriched his repertoire with other sources of natural and artificial light, such as fireplaces, gas stoves, fireworks, electricity and the moonlight).
Around 1830 van Schendel, who meanwhile had moved to Amsterdam, made his first painting depicting a market scene bathed in the light emitted by a candle, a very romantic image which had no equivalent in reality, but that allowed him to gain a huge reputation both in Holland and abroad.
Like most of the artists he was struggling to make a living, so he decided to leave Amsterdam in 1832 to settle in Rotterdam, where he was offered a position as a teacher of drawing: in the meantime in 1830 he had married Elisabeth Grasveld who will give him thirteen children, ten of whom were still alive when she'll expire on March 21st, 1851. In the early years of his career, Van Schendel tried to experience a great number and variety of subjects such as portraits, religious subjects, interiors,

historical scenes, themes drawn from literature, music, inspired by the fairs, dedicating himself even to a still life. In Rotterdam he got a job as a teacher at a local Academy and remained there until 1838, when he moved to The Hague, where he expected to find more customers for his paintings and to concentrate himself on market scenes which were obtaining more and more success, not only in the lands nearby, but also, increasingly, beyond the borders of the Netherlands and it was then that he successfully conquered foreign markets by selling several paintings of art belonging to various European royal collections and getting medals from exhibitions and foreign showrooms, such as those in Paris, Brussels and Manchester.
In 1845 he left The Hague and settled in Brussels, where his studio in Schaerbeek received many visitors including collectors, members of the royal family and important art dealers. His large-scale masterpiece, The Birth of Christ, 1858, attracted there many admirers and was later successfully exhibited in England.
It was during those years that he created the famous series of paintings that bear the general title of the Evening market in Antwerp,

 ~Vincent Van Gogh

where all the charm that the atmosphere which a candle is able to create is painted by him with unparalleled mastery in scenarios bearing  in the background the outline of the stately mansions and of the bell towers surrounding the square where the sale takes place, deliberately painted also as a time of meeting, ' designed ' by the silvery whiteness of the light of the moon ' peeping ' through the clouds.

After the death of van Schendel, which took place in 1870, his works fell into oblivion as a result of the emergence of new artistic trends, but recently, exhibited in the museums of Amsterdam, The Hague, Hamburg, Berlin, Leipzig, Monaco of Bavaria, and Stuttgart, his paintings are experiencing a sharp revaluation as seen by modern critics as a wonderful and unique example of romantic art for the lights and the atmosphere of which they are holders.
Before leaving you wih my thanks, indeed, my leave is increasingly full of affection and gratitude, I would like to quote Goethe, the romantic poet who just in those years, in neighbouring Germany, wrote:

-
picture 18 A Summer Evenng by Candle and Moonlight

So dear night the half of life is,
And the fairest half indeed.

~Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 - 1832)

your words go straight to my heart, my dearest !
Atually, before than giving life to my blog I've visited so many other blogs for a few years and most of them were written in other languages, Italian is not very common in the Blogosphere !
I do understand English very well and, as you can see, I manage writing in this language which is my second mother tongue, but when I happened to translate, sometime, using the web translator for doing faster, well, the meaning of the writing was completely upset ... try once to translate a piece from Italian to English and you'll see what a mess !
English is an Anglo Saxon language, Italian has neolatine roots, with differents grammatical rules which no translator considers, so, very often, a subject becomes an object inside a phrase after the translation !
I know it's a little sacrifice for you to scroll down the page for reading the text in English, but, believe me, it's worth for understanding the meaning of what I wrote ... and nowadays also people coming from countries where English is not spoken do know surely English, which today has become so international ...
Anyway I thank you so much for your advice and your suggestion, darling friend, I hug you with dear love, sending blessings on the remainder of your week ✿⊱╮

  5. Very interesting how he was able to sell his paintings in other countries. The candle light paintings are so pretty, I remember the markets closing early when we lived in England and I see that he just painted it in the dark anyway.
He had a nice big family too didn't he, and on a art teachers salary at first. So neat that he was able to live to see how much people enjoyed his work.
Hope your week is well. Thank you for all your sweet comments on my cards, I always look forward to your visits :)

you're like a ray of sun, my dearie !
As you say he was quite fortunate for his time, for having enjoyed the satisfaction and the earning of his masterpieces, that is, still today, not so common, once it was easier that an important artist was known and appreciated and then became famous after his death ... and probably it happens still today.

My darling, my comments on your cards come spontaneous to me, I write what I feel watching at your little masterpieces, believe me, the thing is that you're a true artist with a golden heart !

  22. I have loved walking through your gallery of Petrus van Schendel's glorious paintings, Dany. Each one of them evoke a feeling of happiness, a sense of beauty of another era. How wonderful people are taking notice of Schendel's glorious works of art once again!
