An aquarium drawing inspiration from Victorian Wardian Cases

Last year hubby and I built a new aquarium for our little fishes: we have goldfishes and other fishes of every colour, also mixed, and carps, all living happily together, and we thought about something which would be capable to contain much water for their wellness. Of course it had to be in vintage style! So we commissioned our glassmaker nine plates of glass, eight for the sides and one, the nineth, which had to be eight-shaped for the bottom.
We assembled the pieces of tempered glass by sealing them carefully with the help of metal strips, also cut to size.

Everybody at home liked the new ottagonal aquarium,

but since it was quite large, we had to place it on our veranda table, which, alas, could not be used for anything else (on cold but sunny Winter days, we've always had the habit of moving to the veranda for breakfast or lunch).
Every year, during the beautiful season, our little fish spend their holidays in the fountain shaded by the trees in our secret garden, which gave us the opportunity, a few days ago, to build a small but sturdy table suitable for their aquarium, which holds almost 200 liters of water.
We are so in love with Victorian Wardian cases, the small glass greenhouses named after Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward (1791–1868) of London, who popularized them only after experimenting with them primarily for transporting and preserving tropical plants. (Click HERE if you'd like to read the post in which ~ My Little Old World ~ dealed with this fascinating topic.) But Wardian cases also became very useful for protecting plants in London apartments from the smoky air caused by the coal that the town's earliest industries used as fuel. That polluted air was called "smoky fog," later shortened to "smog." Naturally, plants need light and must be placed near windows, but smog would enter through them, making it even less suitable for keeping plants on windowsills. And smog was also the reason why women's dresses were all in shades of grey and the hats they wore to complete their "toilettes" were black. A Wardian case would have been so in harmony with our veranda decor, so we decided to start working on something similar, but not to contain plants: one that would house our little fish. We already had an aquarium with an unusual shape; we just needed its stylish wooden stand. Hubby took four wooden poles and turned them on the lathe to shape them in Victorian style.
Then he took some old planks we had lying around, and we started by cleaning them and then taking very precise measurements so that the base would fit the size of the aquarium. Then he took care of cutting the various pieces,

and I of assembling them - hubby says I'm terribly precise!
But precision is far important in such a work, isn't it?!?

As you can see, our little table is made of different pieces of wood, of different essences, some offcuts, something already painted, but we didn't care, our meaning was to finally paint everything with a pale green paint that would have covered and make uniform everything.

After just one hand of painting it looked so different, almost as we wanted it to be, but two hands were just enough to obtain the final result we wanted.

We finally made a cap for our aquarium made just of the same measure of the table top and painted that too.

With our little fishes still "on holiday" it was possible to us to clean the aquarium and the gravel on its bottom,

and here's our aquarium in its new style, waiting for the little fishes which still are swimming in the water of the fountain.

Wardian cases were much more refined and elegant, but I must admit that they inspired me, and we had to think of our little fishes and their needs as for space, not to plants.  I'd love to put on its cap a plant to make the result even more vintage style, I'm still wondering which one... In a few days our little ones are going to come back home and let's hope they will like their new position, amongst the green of the plants and just in front of the window.
Here they will see the sun shining, the rain and the snowflakes falling from the sky.

With sincere thankfulness for your enthusiasm
and affection you
never fail to show me,
I'm sending my dearest embrace to all ~ My Little Old World ~

See you soon

IMMAGINE 2

... E a tutti in casa il nuovo acquario è piaciuto molto!

IMMAGINE 3

IMMAGINE 4

A presto

    1. Linda, Dearest One,
I thank you so much for this visit of yours, I'm always far glad to read your comments, you're such a kindhearted Lady!
This post is filled with sweets creatures and you, who are so sensitive, appreciated it maybe just for this reason, I do understand you. So you met one of our kittens - they're our fur-babies, and Gippy: the bird who's curiously looking at the aquarium is a redstart we adopted because he fell down from his nest. He lived with us in his aviary for almost eight years and passed away this Summer, alas...
I'm probably exaggerated, but I don't feel ashamed to tell you that I talk to my little fishes which touch me when I do the cleaning of the water and call me when they're hungry by pressing their lips to the glass!
Nature is such a Wonderful Gift to us, but sometimes we forget how important it is...

  2. Hi dear Daniela, I could see the bird 🐦 but not as well as I could see your cat. I am so sorry for your loss. It's so hard to lose a pet.
I also talk to animals, birds, fish, turtles, whatever I see on my walks in nature or anywhere. I had two zebra finches but one died 3 days before my 69th birthday, on October 24th, just recently. I empathize and understand the pain of losing a pet, dear friend.
Thank you so much for sharing, Daniela, we have much in common.

Dear, you said it, we've much in common, Dearie!
Yes, it's hard to loose pets. Of course they don't live forever, but when they leave us, to us remain just such a feeling of emptiness, they're something like holes in our heart that, also with the passing of the time, days, months, years, it doesn't go bye. It is the same that it happens with people belonging to our family, indeed, they're truly part of our family, at least, for us who consider them like babies :)
      I so appreciate your sweetness,
thank you for being so precious to me ❥

Thank you for your words sweet friend! They are at home with us now, and they seem to enjoy the new position of their aquarium, they look so curious about everything that is new. The temperature has become a little bit colder during the last two days as has the water in the fountain, so we thought it had arrived the time for them to finish their holidays.
Wishing you a lovely day ♡❤♡

    1. David,
Dear Friend, I must admit that hubby and I love working together. We dared, more than 20 years ago, to bring back to life an ancient residence of the 15th century that today is our home and that of my parents made of blocks of stones as it was usual at the time. All this with daddy's help and support, they were so many the things to do! It was an old farmstead, and before that a place inhabited by monks, and we had to work hard to make it suitable for us to live in. But we managed, little by little, over a few years, to complete all the works, especially inside, in the free time that our jobs allowed us - I was teaching quite far from here, then, and Rossano was already driving his bus - sacrificing some hours of sleep and working till late at night during the Winter.
With sincere gratitude for taking the time to comment and for your very beautiful words,
I wish you a most wonderful weekend ahead

I dont' receive any update from you for such a long time, that's why I thought I had lost you so as it happened with many other blog-friends I had during the first years of blogging and whose blog closed after the Covid pandemic. Thank God you're here today and I'm far glad to read you're still keeping the bookmark you won from my giveaway celebrating ~ My little old world ~'s third year.
I hope and pray everything goes well for you too, you're such a good-natured lady. Sometime, during the year, I have to stop writing for a while, I cannot manage writing every 4-5 day anymore, alas, times have changed, but I always come back as soon as I can, and every time I find fewer friends.
May your day be blessed with Joy and Wonder,

  15. To see you two work together to create an amazing aquarium is heartwarming. I've admired the Victorian Wardian cases for years, and your creation is quite beautiful. As for the plant on top, the Victorians had a love affair with ferns, but my favorite would be a hanging plant to drape down the sides with not too much foliage. A lovely post to read, as all your posts are.
