♚ NOBLE MANSIONS AND CROWNS ♚ The Kaiservilla in Bad Ischl, Emperor Franz Josef and Empress Elisabeth's Summer retreat.

The Esplanade of Ischl by Rudolf von Alt,1840

Like a gem among the gems set between the mountains that are dressed in mother-of-pearl at sunset waiting to turn gilded the next morning and the alpine lakes with the clear turquoise waters of the Salzburger reliefs - Ischl owes its name to the Celtic term Iscla or Iscula, the name given to the river that today runs alongside the Imperial Villa and which we find already written in a document of the year 829, to finally become Ischl about two hundred years later.

But it is with the XIXth century that it also acquires importance as a spa, when to its highly saline mineral springs are recognized therapeutic properties, already known at the time of Emperor Maximilian, but in those years confirmed by Doctor Josef Götz who recognizes them, specifically, useful above all for treating disorders of the motor, respiratory and cardiovascular systems and therefore opens the first thermal establishment there in 1823. Since then, the small town of Ischl has been transformed into a holiday resort for diplomats and aristocrats, not least the Austrian chancellor Prince Metternich who rented a charming villa built in 1834 for Dr. Josef Eltz, a Viennese lawyer, located at the foot of the hill called Jainzen, from which one could enjoy an enchanting view over the village.

Ischl by Hubert Sattler, 1863

On the advice of the court doctor, Dr. Wierer, according to whom to the waters of the small spa could also be attributed curative properties against sterility, the Archduke Franz Karl, brother of the Austrian Emperor Ferdinand I, and the Archduchess Sophie, his wife, born Princess of Bavaria as the daughter of King Maximilian I, married in 1824 and after three years of marriage still childless, began to 'cure' themselves in Ischl in 1827. On 18th, August 1830 it was born in Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, the future Emperor Franz Joseph followed on July 6th, 1832 by Ferdinand Maximilian, future Emperor of Mexico, on July 30th, 1833 by their brother Karl Ludwig, on October 27th, 1835 the first and only female, Maria Anna , who died at the age of four, and finally Ludwig Viktor, born on May 15th, 1842 (in reality the couple had six children, if we also take into account the little one who was born dead on October 24th, 1840). It goes without saying that what Dr. Wierer was persuaded of found wide confirmation in the facts and that the family of archdukes since then saw in Ischl a place invested with a sort of sacredness, to which they returned every year to spend the Summer holidays, almost to celebrate a 'thanksgiving rite'.

Already in the summer of 1831 the inhabitants of the village saw for the first time the little Franz Josef who celebrated his first birthday there and, since then, every year, until his death, which took place on November 21st, 1916, on August 18th he didn't fail to be found in Ischl where not only the imperial family met, but also all the inhabitants of the village celebrated what from 1849 became no longer a simple birthday, but the birthday of an illustrious person (on December 2nd, 1848, when the all the Europe was inflamed by revolutionary uprisings, the Emperor of Austria, Ferdinand I, abdicated in favor of his brother, Archduke Franz Karl, who refused the succession after a few hours that he had been granted and ceded the throne to his eldest son who became Emperor with the name of Franz Josef I). On August 16th, 1853, Archduchess Ludovika, wife of Duke Maximilian Joseph in Bavaria, called Max, and sister of Sophie, went to Ischl with her two eldest daughters, Helene, called Néné, aged nineteen, and Elisabetta, called Sisi, who was only sixteen. Sofia, as the mother of the Emperor, had organized this meeting in the smallest details so that his son could get to know Elena, because it was her will that she would have become his future bride and one day sit on the imperial throne at his side. The meeting took place in the hall of the Hotel Austria, where Ludovica had booked her own rooms - Franz Josef, as usual, had already taken up residence, with his entourage, at the mayor of the town, while his parents were renting for nine years the Villa of Dr. Eltz, which has become Villa Mastalier. It was tea time, or four in the afternoon, when for the first time the young emperor's eyes met those of his very young cousin, Sisi, two doe eyes, brown, deep, so much so as to seem almost velvet.

A photography of the aged nineteen Helene in Bavaria ready to become the spouse of her cousin Franz Josef

Litography from 1853 by Franz Seraph Hanfstaengl portraying a very young Sisi at the time of her first fated stay at Ischl

And so it was that during the whole week that followed that day, spent in Ischl, it was the youngest of the Wittelsbach sisters who won the heart of the twenty-three year old Franz Josef, who will ensure, for the first time, that his will prevail over the plans of his mother who until then had planned every little step of his life: love had made the young Emperor sure of his intentions and for no reason did he want to give up his own intentions.

Participation with which the engagement of Franz Josef and Elisabeth was officially announced

Therefore the birth of this great love is also linked to Ischl, and the announcement of the engagement, although in an unofficial way; but not only: every year, Franz  Josef and Elisabeth will return there, even with their children, and will stay in what will called Kaiservilla, the Imperial Villa, which was donated by Archduchess Sophie to her son on the occasion of his wedding with the beloved Elisabeth. She bought the Villa in which she had spent the Summer holidays with her husband for many years, the Villa Mastalier, and ordered to the architect Antonio Legrenzi to add two wings to it, to enlarge it and so that it would assume, seen from above, the shape of a great 'E' in honor of her future daughter-in-law. This place surrounded by nature was loved a lot by Sisi and by all the children she had from Franz Josef, but the one who felt most attached to it was their youngest child, Marie Valerie, hes favorite, who inherited it and continued to bring on the tradition of staying there in the Summer with the new, large family to which she had given life by marrying Archduke Franz Salvator of the Habsburg branch of Tuscany (the couple had 10 children).

The Kaiservilla

Today the Villa has become for the most part a museum of considerable interest as it preserves the rooms intact, complete with furnishings and personal objects, as they were at the time when Franz Josef and Elisabeth spent their holidays there.

Just some rooms are used as accommodation for Maria Valeria's son-in-law, Archduke Markus Emanuel Salvator of Habsburg-Lorraine, who inherited it from his father Hubert Salvator (second son of the archducal couple), who lives there with his family.

Even today our time has passed quickly and, if you have followed me this far, I wish you all the best by giving you an appointment at the next post.

See you soon ♥

IMMAGINE 1 - The Esplanade of Ischl by Rudolf von Alt,1840

IMMAGINE 2 - Ischl by Hubert Sattler, 1863

A. Karr (1808 - 1890)

nell'oberburgau

 Vista dell'oberburgau dallo Schaftberg

Ella lavorava presso la fattoria di famiglia accogliendo e ristorando i turisti di passaggio ai tavoli che nella bella stagione erano posti sotto gli alberi del prato davanti a casa e, quando era il periodo della transumanza, si trasferiva nella malga con la propria mandria per occuparsi della produzione di latte, burro e formaggi, da far scendere poi a valle, attività in cui era specializzata;

Franz Joseph and the Princess of Salt: the secret children of the Emperor.

«Two silent lovers resemble two harpswith the same pitchand ready to confuse their voices in a divine harmony.»

A. Karr (1808 - 1890)

I wonder how, anyone of us who has some knowledge of the temperament of the Empress Elizabeth of Austria, thinks the character of her consort was, the Emperor Francis Joseph I, placed, by the abdication of his father, Charles Francis of Habsburg-Lorraine in 1848, thus very young and in a historical period characterized by considerable turbulence and uncertainties, at the eve of the First War of Independence fought in Lombardoveneto against Italy, to guide the Austrian Empire (which in 1867 will become, with the annexation of the Kingdom of Hungary, the Austro-Hungarian Empire).

- picture 2 - Christian Fries' portrait, 1848

Reading the words traced from the Augusta Sovereign in her private writings and especially those from the little Marie Valerie noted in her diary, we deduce the portrait of a man very loyal to his duty, groom, first of all, to his imperial duty, a simple man of few claims who rested for a few hours in deepest of the night of an army cot to awaken at five o'clock in the morning, had a bath, and then seat at his desk in the study of the imperial palace while everyone was still asleep, to begin with consider the massive amount of parcels that every day awaited him; rather introverted, hardly leaked his inner world, but he was a man with his own passions, able to love his children, in need of sweetness more than he cared to show, a lover of nature and of hiking in the mountains, lover of the outdoors life which often, as of his beloved ones, had to deprive himself, fond of hunting, especially linked to the Salzkammergut.*
Good-looking, in full of the years of his youth and maturity (here we see him in a photo of 1865 showing him at age of 35)

- picture 3

he certainly had much that could attract the young girls, those most interested and those with no great pretensions, those who ignored or didn't think the fact he was, among the other things, also the Emperor.

This story takes us to one of the regions that I love more, the Austrian 'Lake District' region, dotted with alpine lakes like pearls set among the mountains which form the back of the Salzburg Land

- picture 4

... Small villages where time seems to have stopped centuries ago, inhabited only by elderly people and playful children, dotting the lakes and mountains as in a crib, spiers and sharpened steeples, emerging from the waves of the sea of the green velvet meadows of alpine pastures, to seem to push themselves tall enough almost for touching the sky; cattle grazing everywhere communicate still nowadays this pristine Nature.

- picture 5

- picture 6

In 1837 many Austrian nobles were aware of these dreamlands thanks to fate that linked the imperial family to these places: after years of marriage and five abortions, the Archduchess Sophie was advised to undergo a cure with the brackish waters flowing below the village of Bad Ischl and in 1830 she finally gave birth to her first child, healthy and future heir to the throne, Franz Joseph (which was followed by three other males, Maximilian born in 1832, Karl Ludwig born in 1833, Ludwig Viktor born in 1842 and a female, Maria Anna Carolina born in 1835 ); it goes without saying that since the imperial family considered these places like a sanctuary where the Archduchess wanted to be built a summer residence for her huge family, the Kaiservilla, a simple Biedermeier-style building surrounded by a large park in English style. (in 1854 it will became her wedding present to her son Franz Joseph after having made change its original structure in such a way that, seen from above,it would have taken the shape of an 'E' in honor of the future Empress.)

To be more precise our history leads us on the eastern shores of the Mondsee,

where already in 1500 stood and was renowned the Grauwitz farm built in the midde of a large estate situated between the pastures of the Eisenau and the woods of the Schlafberg, that during the summer season was also a sesonal inn; the Habsburgs knew very well these places and the Pointingers, who were the owner at that time, having often stayed at the inn during their summer excursions.
In 1869 Theresia Pointinger, Reserl, was 23 years old and, "despite four brothers and sisters, is, rightly, the pride of her parents. During the years spent at the family farm, Reserl has become a responsible woman, able to perform her duties with ease. Thanks to her strong and vigorous temperament she has been able to stand out from the others and has become an important reference person inside the farm. This determination and generosity towards the weak push her to confront herself with new challenges. Instinctively Reserl is attracted by the solitude of nature, from which she can always draw new teachings, and that, by allowing her to clear her mind and thoughts, becames her most valuable ally. "1

She worked at the family farm refreshing and welcoming the tourists that, passing there, seat at the tables which in the beautiful season were placed under the trees in the front lawn, and when was the transhumance period, she moved to the hut with her herd to deal with the production of milk, butter and cheese - to bring down to the valley - activities which she was specialized in;

the hut was situated at 1782 meters above the sea level on the crossroads of many hunting hiking quite often frequented, the nearest of which was the one who started from the Kaiservilla in Bad Ischl, where the imperial family spent the most of the summer and  the Emperor the entire period of the duration of the hunting season.
One evening, after closing the barn, about to come back home, "a hunter caughts her attention.  He wouldn't be distinguished from the other hunters, if not for the clothes he wears: a gray felt hat, a gray loden jacket and socks, also gray. When the hunter approaches Reserl's hut, despite the dim light of the sunset, the girl recognizes in that gait, slight and singular, Franz Joseph, Emperor of Austria. Reserl is surprised, and happy, that after visiting her parents Franz Joseph decided to continue and walk till the Eisenau. She doesn't know yet that this meeting would have changed her life forever. [...] Reserl invites Franz Joseph to sit inside her chalet. The fire crackles in the hearth. Franz Joseph takes off his jacket and eats heartily the schmarren that Reserl has prepared for him in a small pan on the stove. The emperor asks Reserl information about her life, about what she does and if the work at the hut is all on her shoulders. Up here for Franz Joseph there are no differences in social classes; the grandeur of the mountains and the force of nature in fact make men aware of their limits and sometimes help them to get stronger.
Franz Joseph sits next to Reserl and a moment later his hand approaches the womb of the girl. The fine hand of Reserl responds to the Emperor's invitation, and when, shortly after, the lips of Francis Joseph alight on hers, the two finally indulge in the passion that for long they have had to choke. "2

This was the episode that marked the beginning of a relationship that lasted for more than ten years and from which will born: Anton (April 6th, 1870) of whom I couldn't find any photographs,
Franziska (January 1st, 1872),

the first three of which will be grown from the sister of Reserl, Franziska, at the Pointinger farm.

Since the seventies the Empress and Franz Joseph live a life increasingly separate, so that the latter comes to think that the trips she leads often bringing with her the little Maria Valeria are a pretext to keep him away from her, the which only strengthens the emotional bond that link him to Reserl, but the commitments in Vienna not always leave him free to devote himself to hunting and to leave the capital to seek refuge in the Kaiservilla, his little 'paradise on earth' as he lovingly called it.

Reserl in April of the year 1874, in the meanwhile, married Wilhelm Buchwald, an imperial huntsman widowed only for a month, who has long courted her before and was very aware of her relationship with the Emperor, had thus a family and so when, after some years, Franz Joseph will return to her lighting back in her the old passion and Wilhelmina, the fourth daughter of the Emperor, will born - her name is not coincidentally the feminine of that of her husband, given her in order to reassure him about his paternity - she will grow together with the other children of the Buchwalds that will permanently move in the eighties to Bavaria in search of fortune.

This is a true story kept for over a hundred years in the family Pointinger and revealed on her deathbed by sister Friedbuga, Reserl's grand-daughter who became Franciscan sister, and great-aunt of Hubert Pointinger - both descendants of Mathias - author of the text translated into Italian with the title: L'ALTRA DINASTIA - I QUATTRO FIGLI SEGRETI DI FRANCESCO GIUSEPPE published by the MGS PRESS of Trieste ( here you can find the book in English and here you may download the kindle version )

I feel I have to thank you all, the author, the translator and the editors who have allowed us to penetrate into the most private aspects of the lives of these characters to know the most human and fallible aspects of their personality, and thanks to you, my dear readers, I am sure that you've loved this part of history for the most unknown.

See you soon ♥

Quotations and notes:

*  The Principality or Archbishopric of Salzburg was once powerful and rich, with an immeasurable wealth the most of which coming from the underground, the salt mines in Dürrnberg already known 2500 years ago by the Celts; the white gold, which in part gave the name to the city of Salzburg, where the salt was sent down from the mines, was once extremely valuable because these places for centuries held the primacy in this trade around the old continent.

Maria Valeria d'Asburgo, figlia prediletta, l'Unica.

Marie Valerie von Österreich, by Victor Angerer, 1871

A Vienna è spesso angustiata.  9

Potesse solo presentirlo ! 14

- Principe Pietro Altenburg, nipote dell'arciduchessa Maria Valeria.

A presto ♥

Note:

Marie Valerie von Habsburg, favourite daughter, "The only one".

- picture 1

- Mom said she loves me only .. "So you love only once in your life. You only think about your beloved creature, everything is for her, the others don't claim nor expect anything. That's why I cannot even understand how you can love many people" ...

Before I was born she had this love ("terrible"). With the other children of hers it was grandmother Sofia who ran the role of the mother - with me ... it had to be different, in spite of her mother-in-law I had to be her and only her child, her jewel, on which no one could have rights, except for her, and all her capacity to love, which until then had remained locked in her heart, flowed toward this child. - 1

Can we love a creature of an annihilating, absolute, almost suffocating love, when we gave her life? I suppose it's possible ...
From the autobiographical sources written by those who were very close to her, the private writings and the poems that Sissi has left us, shines something far more profound, radical, and springer than an emotional tie, Maria Valeria immediately won her heart, immediately became part of her so as to be with this creature of hers one, inseparable, indeed, she represented the most beautiful part of her, the most genuine, authentic, the only one which still could lull dreams and aspirations, nurture hopes, ... the ONLY ONE, exactly.
Bride from 1854 to Franz Joseph, already Emperor of Austria, on 5th March, 1855 Elizabeth gave birth to the beautiful Sofia Amalia

- picture 2

that will pass away at the age of only three years old: about this very sad loss the Empress will never say a word, we read among the pages of Maria Valeria's Diary, and will be just her to discover documents, papers and portraits of this sister lost before having known her, hidden and kept in a drawer in her mother's room, opened only after her death with the intention to rearrange her memories. .
Those related to little Sofia were the first great Sissi's pains: seeing the young girl still unfit to be an Emperor's wife ( opinion which will never change ), Franz Joseph's mother, Sofia, will feel empowered to take full responsibility of the granddaughter's education, imposing her even her name without consulting her mother. Unbeknownst to the Empress she also ordered that the little Archduchess's apartaments were close to hers and that Sissi could pay visits to her child only in her presence.
To the Empress, who couldn't even count on the understanding and the support of her husband, the shock was so great that in 1858 almost kidnapped the small Sofia and Gisella, born a year later, to bring them in Hungary, but it was, unfortunately, a fatal act as both small babies fell seriously ill with German measles so as to arrive at the end of their life: Gisella, more robust, managed to miraculously recovered,

- picture 3

but for Sofia any hope was in vain.
For Elizabeth, it was a so horrible event that began with bringing melancholy and sadness in her life, she was discovering more and more that she couldn't live her life as she wished.
Marked by a deep sense of guilt for her small daughter's death, closed in her room among the narrow walls of Schönbrunn trying to stifle her excruciating pain, while Franz Joseph resumed his journey, Elizabeth walked out of depression discovering to wait for a child.
It was August 21st, 1858 when the heir to the imperial throne born, Rodolfo, who grew up with his sister Gisella, separated only by two years, both bred still following the court ceremonial,

Maria Valeria Matilda Amelia Habsburg-Lorraine will born, Sissi finally, at the age of 31 years, will be able, for the first time, to make the mother and to go back and see the light in her life: one, one of her lots of dreams was to finding fulfillment (Archduchess Sophie, now elderly, will die after a long illness in 1872, and on this niece didn't succeed in imposing her "jurisdiction"; Elizabeth knew she had to find anyway the strength to prevail also as a result of the reactions of the small Rodolfo who resented the education which was imposed him and the methods which it was given by).
For centuries a royal prince didn't born in Hungary and Sissi, recently crowned Queen of Hungary,

wanted to bestow this gift to her new subjects : if a prince was born he would be called Stephen, patron of this troubled land the fortune of which the Empress deeply committed herself to revive, but being a princess, her name was taken from the history; in the Roman period Hungary was originally part of the Lower Pannonia provence, but it was later divided, under Diocletian, in Pannonia Secunda and Pannonia Valeria or simply Valeria and Maria Valeria or Valerie, as it was affectionately called in her family, will be dubbed by the subjects " Hungarian girl " not only because Hungary gave her birth; at that time they "gossiped " about the possible paternity given by count Gyula Andrássy, Hungarian Prime Minister and great admirer of the Empress, gossips corroborated by her lower resemblance to her father than her brothers, but always just gossips remained; because she'll be spurred to talk to her parents in Hungarian rather than in German and because often the Hungarians will see her at the castle, which, like her mother, inevitably will love much.

At that time Gisella was 12 years old and Rodolfo 10, Maria Valeria won't grow with her siblings who will get married when she was still a child,

but she'll be closely related to some maternal cousins, especially Amalia, who will be for her as a sister (daughter of the beloved brother Karl Theodor Sissi considered her as the other creatures of hers), always at her side, and from whom she'll never separate if not with her marriage,

and with her parents of whom shared commitments, interests, leisure, holidays, days of court, trying to re-solder a tie that was already deteriorating because more and more came to light unbridgeable differences between two extraordinary characters, but far away, more and more distant, the one taken by the duty dictated from being Emperor of the Austrians and the Hungarians, the other by her emotion, by her own inner life, by her dashed aspirations, by her solitude.
It was the Emperor who exercised an enormous charm in this very delicate girl's eyes

who, like everyone else, was dazzled by her mother's disruptive beauty *, that she'll always admire and desire ... always ...

but couldn't resist "her" imperturbable and impenetrable, sweet, shy, reserved, but tender Emperor:

1884, MAY 29th - Now in short, the time has come ... the door opened and in a flash I was already beside him - I took his hand, kissed it a few times, but I left it early to, forgetting everything, tighten both of my arms around his neck and kissed him once, twice! Him! My father! My Emperor! It was a dream, a charming drunkenness. He also kissed me several times and when he finally pulled away from me, his first words were: " How much time." He undressed quickly, and, as opened a large number of writings placed on his desk, I had to tell him about Mom, Metzeger etc ... then his coffee was brought and, to my great surprise, he had breakfast at his desk! He asked me if I already had breakfast and when I said no - oh charm ! - He made bring my breakfast in his room and I could eat next to him. Too much happiness! Will he have noticed how happy I was ? He noticed it for sure, because he said I could stay until 8am and then I sat as quiet as a mouse on the chair beside his desk, as he began to work. It had never happened, never, never! Every now and again asked something or made an observation about his work and then again there was silence for a while, broken only by the scratching of his pen when he signed the documents. - And despite it dad looked so happy as, perhaps, I never have seen him before! And how blessed I was ...3

MAY 30th - After lunch Dad told me that I could go over there and I was sitting a good hour without opening my mouth, while he, smoking, worked. They must have been important things, because he looked up once to comment: " You must be terribly bored," to which I naturally replied in one breath: " Oh no daddy, it's nice to sit here ..." " A good fun," he said and went back to work. Poor ! See him sitting so patiently in front of that stack of cards, without a whimper ... while each in our State goes away its own concerns and problems, higher and higher, higher and higher, until it all comes up to the Emperor - and he, who cannot push it higher, dispatches everything, taking care of the welfare of everyone. It's really nice having such a father. At 8 Dad told me goodnight. 4

And this tendency will be for her often cause for regret : smothered with the overflowing and never concealed Sissi's love, which only later will understand and reciprocate to get to the point to define her "The best of mothers" 5, Maria Valeria will live her childhood often troubled by anxieties and thoughts dictated by a deep sense of guilt.

1888, SEPTEMBER 5th - To stay so much together wit Mom often overwhelms me, her exorbitant love produces in me a constant feeling of constriction  and then I feel bad and false.

SEPTEMBER 6th - Mom told me that if I get married she'll never be happy to see me anymore: she is like some animals who abandon their children when someone touches them ... 6

1890, July 14th - Mom's exaggerated love often bears on me like an inextinguishable debt, I accuse myself of being ungrateful and I get scared at the thought that the happy family heart and home - so at least it seems to me - I won't really miss it when I'll leave. 7

Of her mother she accepted, but with suffering, the continued absences dictated by the irrepressible need to escape from the court of Vienna, from the "Schönbrunn Palace, hateful, disgusting, sleazy, .. this starched and imperial castle" 8,

1886, JANUARY 1st - Because of her headaches, Mom didn't attend the big family dinner. In Vienna she's often distressed. 9

1882, JANUARY 31st - Thursday Mom has to go - I have the most horrible fears and yesterday I cried in bed! But I will pray so much on God to protect her that He will do it for sure. 10

but when she returned it was always immense and uncontrollable the joy that Maria Valeria lived:

- picture 16

1880, MARCH 11th - Oh! Juhu! - My little Mummy! Tomorrow little Mummy comes, Juhu! Yes, as soon as tomorrow! Because Gisella's Elizabeth has scarlet fever and diphtheria, then mom doesn't go to Monaco and Brussels. 11

MARCH 13th - Mom and Dad were in the hall - and I cried with a loud Juhu and ran to her ... and Mom took me and kissed me for a long time! Oh, how - how happy I was! Then we went into the toilette room and there Mom took off her fur and admired my little gifts. 12

1885, APRIL 2nd - At 8 Mom's train came puffing. How nice to see each other again! 13

even though, by her words, clearly transpires that during Sissi's absences, often very long, she could find the "courage" to overcome the shyness that the august figure of the imperial father instilled to approach, so, to him:

- picture 17

1882, SEPTEMBER 21st - Every time I kiss Dad's hand since he's come back, it's with a feeling of gratitude for the chance to do so. Oh! I could only tell him what I feel for him! He could only have a presentiment of this! 14

1884, JUNE 1st - Dad came back from Oedenburg and at 1.30 we ate alone again, in an unexpected , affable atmosphere !

JUNE 13th - His meeting with Mom after their separation of nearly 3 months was really moving ... After breakfast, Mom, Dad and I went on foot to Possi. But the ideal, affable, unforgettable atmosphere of those days in Schönbrunn is over - now that there's Mom  I don't dare to cheer him up and show furtively my love as then... 15

1885, APRIL 3rd - Dad wrote to Mom that he is sorry that I am away, that Rudolph and Stephanie are back from their trip but they aren't for him a resource as Valeria. Happiness. It means that maybe I was able to cheer him up anyway, to show him my love, though for shyness I have missed so many things to do and say ? 16

- picture 18 - Maria Valeria photographed with her Moony.

It is true that often the Empress, during her trips, brought Maria Valeria with her: to Ischl, in the Kaiservilla, to Italy near Merano (staying at Trauttmansdorff castle), often to Bavaria, in Possenhofen (Possi) and Garatshausen, by uncles and grandparents, but especially to Hungary, in the castle of Gödöllő, received as a gift by the Hungarians, where she will spend part of her more serene days, the "Hungarian child" was really at home: Gödöllő was Elizabeth's personal reign, the only one in which her laws, very little respectful of problems of precedence and protocol, were valid.

- picture 19 - The Imperial Family in the park of the castle of Gödöllő in a rare document of the era.

And when it happened that Maria Valeria couldn't follow her, the solitude won absolute:

"I write in great loneliness / these little poems / distressed and sad heart / my soul debases" 17

we read in the Empress's Poetic Diary when in October 1886, for a cholera epidemic that raged in Hungary, she won't bring the beloved daughter with her.
We could define what the little Maria Valeria had for her mother as a "tormented" love, she had inherited from her the restlessness and intellectual liveliness and felt for her a feeling torn between admiration, affection and deep reproach, for herself and for her mother who saw only responsible for her own sadness ..

1890, JULY 1st - This morning Dad came here and it makes me happy to see how he's happy to be back with us. Mom really still has the first place in his heart - and if only she had wanted to, it would also be the only one!

JULY 5th - ... It 's a joy to see how Dad enjoys these rare days of rest, as he comes back to rejoice, serene, of beautiful things. So we see again the purity of his soul, almost childlike, so moving, from which, despite everything, he can draw with a strong peace. How this heart had could integrate Mom's impetuous mood and melancholy, how happy she could have been despite all the little flaws and weaknesses of Dad ... I go back to my original idea, questioned only every so often, that's Mom who let her happiness slip, certainly because of the situation, but no owing to the dear father. I hope these thoughts not to be unjust - I draw from them the most profound teachings to my own life. 18

And here I stop hoping of having been able to enthrall you at least a little part of what I am in this period of our history, in these characters, in this girl with a so delicate and sensitive soul, so humble and devout, so simple, clear

as emerges from the pages written since her childhood .. Maria Valeria was really characterized by an unique emotionally personality and closing her Diary, read and reread over the years with an ever renewed interest and passion, once again my gaze rests on the quote written on the back cover:

We descendants, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will learn with astonishment to understand our ancestor, we will notice how her vision of the world, the search for a proper understanding, have left an imprint in us and how certain traits recur in us and in our children.

- Prince Peter Altenburg, Archduchess Maria Valeria's grandson.

A warm greeting and much love to all of you following me with affection.

See you soon ♥

Notes:

* Speaking about the well-known Empress's chram, let me tell you an anecdote. The American ambassador in Vienna, for example, wrote in 1864 to his mother at home: " The Empress is, as I've already mentioned several times, a stunning beauty: tall, slender, beautifully formed, with a mass of light brown hair, a low forehead greek type, velvety eyes, very red lips on which hovers a sweet smile, a soft voice from the sympathetic tone and behavior in part shy, in part very pretty. "

A year later, after sitting next to Sissi during a lunch at Court, he wrote: "Well, now I can tell you that she was even overwhelming. Her beauty has further developed this year and she's even more magnificent, charming, perfect. Right in the middle of the room, while she talked with extreme grace suddenly said: ' I'm so clumsy ' blushing soon after in the most adorable way, like a schoolgirl. She had just spilled a glass full of punch on the tablecloth and the Emperor immediately came to rescue her and, to show himself gallant, overthrew one too, after which broke a lot of confusion. Immediately after some wipes have been brought and the damage has been repaired, and no less natural and fascinating than the redness appeared on her cheeks was the involuntary laughter and a bit embarrassed which she has accompanied the little accident with, while the others watched in respectful silence. How it pains me not to belong to the ranks of sentimental poets for weave lots of beautiful poetic comparisons and compose beautiful sonnets dedicate to those majestic eyebrows ! "
