Marcus Stone, the Victorian Romanticism on canvas.

Lovers Embrace

SILENTIUM AMORIS

E come all'alba sopra un liscio prato

Perché taccio ed è muta la mia lira;
Meglio sarebbe altrimenti partirsi
E tu cercare più canore labbra,
E io rifugio in aride memorie

The Letter

Johannes,

Lost in Thougt, 1864

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Tua Cordelia 2

Love at the First Sight

Johannes

Ascolta queste parole supplichevoli ! La tua Cordelia, la tua Cordelia.

                                                                                                                                                                  Tua Cordelia 3

In Love

A Stolen Kiss

Cordelia mia

St.Valentine's Day !

A presto

SILENTIUM AMORIS

AS oftentimes the too resplendent sun
Hurries the pallid and reluctant moon
Back to her sombre cave, ere she hath won
A single ballad from the nightingale,
So doth thy Beauty make my lips to fail,
And all my sweetest singing out of tune.

And as at dawn across the level mead
On wings impetuous some wind will come,
And with its too harsh kisses break the reed
Which was its only instrument of song,
So my too stormy passions work me wrong,
And for excess of Love my Love is dumb.

But surely unto Thee mine eyes did show
  Why I am silent, and my lute unstrung;
Else it were better we should part, and go,
Thou to some lips of sweeter melody,
And I to nurse the barren memory
Of unkissed kisses, and songs never sung.

love seen in its most dramatic aspects as the romantic literature wanted too, populates the paintings of one of the greatest painters of the Victorian era which so many fertility granted to this type of art.

- picture 7 on the left - Son and pupil of the painter Frank Stone, associated with the Royal Academy of Art in London (1800-1859), Marcus Stone began with exhibiting his paintings, not yet eighteen, at the Royal Academy from 1858, of which became member associated (ARA) from 1876 and full member (RA) in 1886. Already in his days his paintings were greatly appreciated and considered extremely prestigious; orphaned father was Charles Dickens to care and wanted him as an illustrator both of his novel Great Expectations in 1862 by Library Edition and, two years later, of Our Mutual Friend also if it must be said that it's on the canvas that he was completely able to express the best of his spirit and his artistic talent.

What Stone represents seems the transposition on canvas of the classic dichotomy of Eros - Thanatos, love and death, which thanks to its brush finds conciliation as if to say that if you live love with too much transport, as a  'dominant thought', it finds the power to annihilate your spirit and to exclude any other type of interest from your existence, to kidnap your mind and your body putting them outside by the flowing of the time and the events characterizing it.

- picture 8 - Reverie, 1896

- picture 9 - Daydreams

That's why it seems so appropriate therefore to accompany these images with some passages from the Diary of the Seducer - Original title: '' Forforerens Dagbog '' - of Soeren A.Kirkegaard (1813-1855), who seems almost Stone had in his mind when he was creating his broken-hearted ladies on canvas ...
The Swedish philosopher, who also was temporally and artistically governed by the Romantic movement that made him as a frame, exposes, by means of a short novel, partly epistolary, published for the first time in 1843 within the work Aut Aut, the difficult relationship between Johannes and Cordelia, showing the smart and elegant aesthetic play of the seducer, who won his prey enchanting the woman with the weapons of his spirit. Johannes, the seducer, is a true esthete who finds contentment to his craving in the moment of the conquest, namely that of the disturbance, the time when the passion generates in the woman a state of confusion, and Cordelia, like every romantic heroine, has fallen in love and lives with suffering and torment this sentiment without any hope; the seducer enjoys the enchantment that comes from this passion without ever surrender to it, in a cruel game that ends with the abandonment.

- picture 10 - The Letter

Johannes,

I don't call you 'my', I do well know that you've never been, and if once I deluded my soul with such a thought, now I am cruelly punished. Indeed I call 'my': my seducer, my impostor, my enemy, my murderess, source of my misfortune, grave of my joy, abyss of my happiness. I call you 'my', and tell myself yours, and if these words once flattered your prostrate pride in my adoration, they sound today as a curse against you, a curse all eternity long.

- picture 11 - Lost in Thougt, 1864

Don't flatter at the thought that it's my intention to follow you or to arm my hand with a dagger, as for to deserve your scorn! Wherever you'll flee, I'll always be yours. Withdraw yourself to the ends of the world, I'll always be yours. Love  others hundred women, I'll be always yours; yes, even in the hour of death I'll be yours. The very words I use against you, prove you that I'm yours. You've dared to deceive a creature to the point of becoming all for her, to the point that I wouldn't want any other joy than to be your slave. I'm yours, yours, yours: your curse.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Your Cordelia 2

- picture 12 - Love at the First Sight

Johannes

therefore there isn't hope anymore? Your love won't awaken anymore? I know why you loved me, although I don't know what gives certainty to me.
I'll wait, even if the time will seem long, I'll wait, I'll wait until you are tired of loving other women; and when your love for me will rise from its grave, I'll be back to love you as always, I'll thank you as always, as once, Johannes, as once ! Is this ruthless coldness of yours against me?

Is this your true nature? Were your love, your rich heart, only lies and untruth? Well, come back into yourself! Bear my love and forgive me if I'm still loving you. I know, my love is a burden to you, but it will arrive a time when you'll return to your Cordelia! Your Cordelia! Listen to these pleading words ! Your Cordelia, your Cordelia.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       Your Cordelia 3

Today for the first time my eye had laid for long about her. So it is that sleep bloats so much from her eyelids to make them shut; maybe that my gaze has such a power. Her eye closes itself, however dark forces stir in her.  She doesn't see that I'm watching her: she feels it, she warns it her whole body. Her eye is going closed and it is night, but inside her it is clear day. 5

My Cordelia

love loves the mystery: an engagement is a revelation; love loves the silence: an engagement is a proclamation; love loves the whisper: an engagement is a deafening disclosure .... 6

But we, believing deeply in love, we make ours the final steps of this pamphlet which states that

Love is all; because of it, for the one who loves, everything has ceased to have its own meaning and only has what love, interpreting it, gives it. 7

The most beautiful wish I could send you, my dearest friends and readers, is that Love is always with you and, for those celebrating it, let me conclude by writing Happy St.Valentine's Day !

See you soon
