Era la notte del 30 gennaio 1774 e presso l'Opéra di Parigi si teneva un ballo in maschera, uno dei tanti balli in maschera con i quali la nobiltà cercava diversivi agli impegni di corte, uno dei tanti balli in maschera cui, con gran sollazzo ed in gran segreto, prendeva parte la Delfina di Francia, Maria Antonietta, con sempre accanto a sè l'iseparabile amica Yolande de Polignac;

Fersen seppe della morte dell'amata solo mesi più tardi quando Jarjayes riuscì a consegnargli la missiva;

A presto

Dany

Maria Antoinette and Fersen, story of a great love.

It was the night of January 30th, 1774 and at the Opéra in Paris was held a masked ball, one of the several masked balls which the nobility was looking for diversions to the commitments of the court with, one of the many masked balls which, with much amusement and in great secret, the Dauphine of France, Marie Antoinette, used to take part, with always the inseparabile friend Yolande de Polignac by her side;

- picture 1

the elegant clock stricked about one in the morning when one clatter of horses preceded the entrance of a young man by an unusual beauty, tall, imposing, ... his arrival wasn't definitely unnoticed: with deep blue eyes topped by thick dark eyebrows, with a vaguely languid look that induced the Duke of Lévis to compare him to a fictional hero, while, due to his extraordinary attractiveness and so graceful facial features he'll deserve the title of ‘ The picture ’ by Lady Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire ( the Queen's coiffeure, Lèonard, will nickname him ‘ Apollo ’), was doing his appearance in the entourage of Versailles a count, handsome, learned ( he spoke fluently five languages) and refined, son of a noblewoman and of a famous Swedish statesman, he was the Count Hans Axel von Fersen visiting the city of Paris during his Grand Tour, in order to refine the education of a gentleman, keeping in touch with the culture of the major European capitals.
Among the crowd a young lady with her face covered by a mask caught his attention and only after exchanging a few words with her, he realized who he faced:

- picture 2

‘ The Dauphine talked to me quite long without I knew who she was; when she was recognized all tightened around her, and she retreated to a stage at three in the morning; I left the ball.  the count will write down in his Journal Intime that same night.
Both were unaware that the meeting would have marked their lives forever: historians don't agree, there is someone supporting that they became lovers, but those who, not having any kind of support in the official sources because most of the count's correspondence and private writings were destroyed to protect his privacy and that of the people who were appointed therein, admits only a deep bond, the fact is that despite the distance, sometimes significant, they'll remain tyed until the Revolution
'sad daughter', the guillotine, the tragic October 16th, 1793, will merciless supervene to separate them.

At the time the count was eighteen years old, coetaneous of the Dauphine, and what seemed to both a simple infatuation will turn, years later, in a relationship based on a deep intimacy, needless to say, that night also Marie Antoinette will be affected by the grace and appeal issued by the Swedish count so much that when she, four years later, will meet him again among the crowd that was presented her in Versailles, became General Lieutenant in the Royal Swedish Army, wearing his tenure as cavalry officer - doublet blue jacket and white tight, suede leather pants - won't fail to recognize him:
‘  The Queen, who is charming, when saw me said: Ah, he's an old acquaintance ! The other members of the royal family didn't say a word   Fersen wrote in a letter to his family.

Despite his admiration for the beautiful Queen, he wasn't yet a frequent visitor of Versailles, that's why Marie Antoinette had to complain about with the Swedish ambassador Creutz and only then he will become part of the inner circle of the fascinating and alluring sovereign's friends.

The Queen, who is the most beautiful and loving Queen I know, was kind enough to ask often about me. She asked Creutz why I don't  attended her Sunday's matches game, and when she knew that I had gone one day when the party was suspended, she has, so to speak, apologized to me. we read in a letter written to his father.

- picture 3 on the left - The Queen didn't bother to hide her penchant for the ‘ beau Fersen , she loved having him next to her during her private dinners in her personal apartment, loved his conversation, loved to see him dressed in the uniform that added charm to his already impressive and athletic figure: their bond was enriched with moments of intimacy and more and more Elle’ discovered in his new friend a person like her, hostile to such formalities, sincere, loyal, .. she was finding her knight, her soul mate ... Marie Antoinette and Hans Haxel were becoming inseparable.

She's a charming princess. She has always treated me with great kindness, since the Baron talked to her, she looks for me even more. She almost always walks with me at the balls and at the theater. Her kindness has aroused the younger courtiers's jealousy, because they cannot understand why a foreigner is treated better than them.   (From a letter addressed from Count Fersen to his father)

To dispel the rumors that numerous circulated at court and to comply with, in addition, his military ambitions, in the beginning of 1779 Fersen decided to leave Versailles willing to support the French army engaged in the American Revolution, but before embarking to the New World went to pay homage to "his" sovereign:

- picture 4

‘ I must confess to your Majesty that the young Count Fersen was so well received by the queen that several people were left offenses. I admit that I cannot keep from thinking that she had a soft spot for him: I saw too obvious signals that may abide the slightest doubt. The behavior of the young Fersen on this occasion was admirable for modesty and reserveness, and especially for his decision to go to America. Starting out, he dismissed any danger, but of course to resist this temptation were necessary wisdom and determination too big for his age. During these recent days, the queen couldn't take hes eyes off him: as she watched him, her eyes filled with tears. I beseech your Majesty to keep secrecy about it all for the sovereign's good and that of Senator Fersen. (Extract from a letter written by Ambassador Creutz to the Swedish King Gustav III)

- picture 5

May God grant them to arrive safely !  Marie Antoinette wrote in a letter to the Empress her mother in Vienna arguing the troop's departure, but we can easily guess whom she was primarily directing their thoughts to ...

Four years will spend before Fersen and Marie Antoinette could meet again, four years during which they will be tyed by a dense correspondence that will strengthen their bond and feed the anxiety of embrace themselves again.

In 1783 Hans Haxel will finally  come back to Versailles, more mature, more 'man', more fascinating. During these years he had been repeatedly urged to consider the idea to marry, and they were always marriages of convenience, designed to achieve a good profit, so far from love.
But in those days, writing to his sister, he, noting that his promises ladies were already married in the meantime, puts end to any doubt:

I'm so happy that I can hardly believe it. I have more of a reason to be, and I'll tell you everything when we'll meet. Despite all the joy to see you again, I cannot leave Paris without regret. You'll find it quite obvious when you'll know the reason for this regret. I'll tell you, because I won't keep anything hidden to you ... I am very glad that Miss Leyell is married. She won't be mentioned again and I hope not to find anyone else. I made a decision. I do not want to contract marital ties: they are contrary to the nature ... I cannot belong the only person I want to belong, the one that really loves me, so I do not want to belong to anyone.

Of course he was referring to his Toinette ...

- picture 6 on the right - Not being able to do anything but stay close to her he made assign by King Gustav a job that would allow him to stay permanently in Paris and was so named ambassador: after making a few trips beside the king, Count Fersen in 1785 settled in France, indeed, to be exact, directly in Versailles !
As recorded in the service of the royal buildings, Marie Antoinette had ordered to be carried out a renovation to her private apartment so to be able and get a small flat for the count, accompanied by a large Swedish stove, the installation of which was quite expensive involving necessarily partial demolition of a wall and a section of the floor.

On April 7th, 1787 Fersen wrote in his diary of the existence of a  project to dwell upstairs   and two weeks later  what she must contrive to let me live upstairs . The stove, and the alcove that its installation was allowed to obtain, were mentioned more explicitly in the following October.

Residing directly in Versailles provided to Fersen the chance of long rides up to the Petit Trianon,

- picture 7

where often the queen was waiting for him

- picture 8

ore reached him by horse ... we should say secretely

- picture 9

but in reality there was always someone of the court to observe ... and consequently to rumor on the physicality of this increasingly likely of their relationship:
Those meetings were a source of great scandal despite the favourite's modesty and privacy, who outwardly never left figure out what his feelings were, and among all the queen's  friends he was the most discreet  will write the Count Saint-Priest; now were few who didn't believe that Marie Antoinette and Fersen were lovers

- picture 10

and when she, in January 1788 will remain pregnant for the future Dauphin of France, the rumors will further incentive: satiric and pornographic cartoons, epithets of the crowd when she appeared in public, the Austrian had to adjust to all this, but with more growing the French's discontent and her unpopularity, which culminated with the historic affair of the necklace,

- picture 11

with more, conversely, increased the estimate that Fernsen had for her and the intimacy that bound them, Elle  was for him a misunderstood heroine, abused, sensitive and suffering:

You cannot avoid but praise the Queen, if you know her desire to do good and the goodness of her heart.  wrote in a letter the handsome Swedish count.

If it's true that love is great when, despite the distance, survives and becomes more and more intense over time, and, as Shakespeare wrote,  Love is not love if alters when faces obstacles. Oh no, it's a fixed point always looking at the storms without being ever shaken by them. It is the star which relates each boat adrift , I think this really was such: Fersen had become his  servante cavalière , to use a term borrowed from the courtly love, faithful
and devoted, discreet and confidential lover and it's said that he almost adored his Joséphine who got involved very intimately and passionately by this love for her  favorite , just only think about the wax cast of her personal seal, bearing the insignia of Fersen's family - a dove returning to its nest - that at the end of her days, after her husband has already been run, will deliver to the General Jarjayes, by means of Toulan, because it was delivered to her Hans, on which was engraved the inscription in Italian  All drive me to you  telling him to ensure Fersen that such words  have never been truer  and asking him to deliver a paper on which was written the phrase  our souls are touching at every point ... the fate can really separate us but never divide.
taken from the Novelle Heloise by Jean Jacques Rousseau ... lovers are bound together by an invisible and indestructible tye that even history, with its events, is able to cut off ...

And now we let's come to history, the official one: we know that the sovereign and his family moved to the Tuileries, and from there, on the night of June 19th, 1790, tried to escape to Austria; well, no history book tells us, but of that escape Fersen was the main organizer: he spent a staggering amount of money, paid five thousand livres for the six-seater sedan with which the royal family would have to reach the Austrian Netherlands and even act as coachman, leaving the company, as by agreement, at the first poste
Unfortunately, however, the flight will tragedly end the next day near Varennes -en -Argonne where teh sovereigns were recognized, arrested and brought back to Paris.

- picture 12

Since then, the Count, sponsored by France and refuged in Belgium, will review his beloved only once, about six months after the flight to Varennes, breaking into, under the cover of darkness and in disguise, the apartments of the Tuileries: there's certain evidence that they spent their last night together in his Journal Intime:
‘ Monday 13, I went to the Queen; took my usual route, fear of the National Guard, her wonderful apartments. I stood there.
Tuesday 14, I saw the King at six o'clock in the evening .
The Fersen's diary editor tried in vain to conceal the short sentence  I stood there - Restè là  which leaves no room for doubt.

Marie Antoinette will remain in contact with whom she considered  the most loved and the most loving of men  through encrypted letters, written relieing on a secret code based on a common book Paul et Virginie by Bernardin de Saint-Pierre.

Fersen knew about his beloved's death only months later when Jarjayes was able to give him the letter;

‘ The one which I lived for, because I never stopped loving her, the one who loved me so much, for whom I would have given a thousand lives, there's no more. Oh, my God ! Why destroy me this way, what have I done to deserve Your wrath ? She isn't alive anymore. I'm in an agony of pain and don't know how manage to bear my suffering. It's so deep and nothing will ever erase it. She will always be in my memory and I will never stop mourning her. ( Letter to his sister Sophie )

will spend the rest of his life wandering around Europe also as a diplomat at King Gustav IV's service, but aimlessly, celebrating October 16th as a mourning day until, wrongly accused of the assassination of the heir to the throne of Sweden, will end up victim of the crow in Stockholm: the fate, once again mocking and merciless, will put so sadly an end to his existence ... it was June 20th, 1810, exactly twenty years after the attempt of escape plotted to rescue his Toinette.

In 1878 were published about sixty letters belonging to the correspondence between Marie Antoinette and Fersen, full of suspicious gaps; later Baron Klinckowström, Fersen's great son, who was curator of those letters, decided to give them the flames. In the only one escaped the fire, found by the translator and expert in Scandinavian languages Lucien Maury, we read:

- picture 13

" I CAN TELL YOU THAT I LOVE YOU AND EVEN THAT IS ALL WHAT I HAVE TIME FOR ... LET ME KNOW WHO I HAVE TO DELIVER THE NEWS THAT I WANT SEND TO YOU, BECAUSE I COULDN'T LIVE WITHOUT THIS . FAREWELL, MY DEAREST AND MOST LOVING AMONG MEN. I'M KISSING YOU WITH ALL MY HEART. "

This is the story of a true love, true and great, as great as heartbreaking, poignant, marked by a fatal and cruel destiny, the same that has dominated the entire, short, existence of this charming, hapless queen ... ...

An affectionate greeting and a warm hug to you all.

See you soon

Dany

E' talmente bello leggere i tuoi commenti ..
