Celebrating the New Year coming 'In the Mould of the Iguanodon'.

Illustrated London News, January 7 1854, Add MS 50150, f. 225

Lithograph published by Day & Son, 1854, showing the Crystal Palace and Park in Sydenham. Add MS 50150.

Original drawing by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins for the invitation to Dinner in the Iguanodon Mould. This is preserved in Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University. A printed invitation also is preserved in the Waterhouse Hawkins collection at the Natural History Museum.

A wonderful illustration of the Iguanodon Dinner - an event held at the Crystal Palace in London in 1853, when dinner was served inside the first ever life-sized dinosaur model (a giant iguanodon). Sir Richard Owen, the man who coined the word ‘dinosaur’, was the host.

Selvaggina: Fagiani, Beccacce, Beccaccini

Dolci: Macedonia in Gelatina, Gelatina di Arancia, Bavarese, Charlotte Russa, Pasticceria Francese, Torrone à la Chantilly, Buisson di Meringa alla [ Confettura ?]

Desserts: Uva, Mele, Pere, Mandorle e Uvetta, Prugne Francesi, Pinoli, Nocciole, Noci &c,&c

The Dinner in the Mould of the Iguanodon by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins,
Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University.

A thousand ages underground,
His skeleton had lain,
But now his body's big and round,
And there's life in him again !
The jolly old beast is not deceased,
There's life in him again,
The jolly old beast is not deceased,
There's life in him again.

His bones like Adam's wrapped in clay,
His ribbs of iron stout,
Where is the brute alive today,
That dares to turn him out.
The jolly old beast is not deceased,
There's life in him again,
The jolly old beast is not deceased,
There's life in him again.

SERENO E PROSPERO ANNO NUOVO A VOI TUTTI,

SIATE LA LUCE DEL 2017 !

- picture 1

On the New Year's Eve of 1853, with the intent to help to promote the permanent exhibition at the Crystal Palace where they were on display huge prehistoric animals made of concrete designed by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins under the scientific direction of Richard Owen, it was held a definitely unusual dinner: twenty-one distinguished academics and important people of the day were invited to a banquet celebrating the new year coming that would have taken place inside the belly of an Iguanodon, the largest among all the dinosaurs exhibited at the Park of Sydenham

- picture 2

yet the invitations that were sent to the diners were harbingers of the extravagance of which they were bearers, as, fully respectful of the prehistoric theme of the banquet, were written on a track marked inside an unfolded wing of a Pterosaur!

- picture 3 - Original drawing by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins for the invitation to Dinner in the Iguanodon Mould. This is preserved in Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University. A printed invitation also is preserved in the Waterhouse Hawkins collection at the Natural History Museum.

This was its text:

“Mr Waterhouse Hawkins requests the honour of_________________at dinner in the mould of the Iguanodon at the Crystal Palace on Saturday evening December the 31st at five o’clock 1853 – an answer will oblige.”

They were part of the guests (all men) Richard Owen, who was sitting inside the head of the mould of the Iguanodon, as if his position would metaphorically indicate that he was really the mind of this project,

- picture 4 - A wonderful illustration of the Iguanodon Dinner - an event held at the Crystal Palace in London in 1853. When dinner was served inside the first ever life-sized dinosaur models (a giant iguanodon). Sir Richard Owen, the man who coined the word 'dinosaur', was the host.

Professor Edward Forbes, a naturalist, geologist and President of the London Geological Society was present at his side along with the eminent Geologist Joseph Prestwich and other well-known scientists in those years. They were also present the investors in the project of the Crystal Palace Company and directors of newspapers, supposedly with the intention to maximize the information service that such an event had to receive.

A sort of stage was erected around the giant reptile, long 11 meters, witness of an era on which everything was still to be discovered and a wooden bandstand was built around the giant model so that the waiters could reach the tables that were quite up off the ground; the model looked, so, surrounded by a curtain at which they were posted four plaques in honor of the famous paleontologists who had contributed to the first studies on this misunderstood primordial world which were bearing the names of William Buckland, Georges Cuvier, Richard Owen and Gideon Mantell and a large chandelier illuminating the table, which would see eight courses, completed the scenary.

It was just Gideon Mantell to appoint and provide a description if you want even much more detailed and accurate of the Iguanodon compared to the image of the dinosaur which came and made create by Waterhouse Hawkins in his gigantic models Richard Owen, who was persuaded that the Iguanodon had virtually identical front and hind legs, while Mantell, on the contrary, argued, rightly, we can say today, that this prehistoric animal, herbivore as he was, was a biped with far shorter forelimbs than hind ones.

Although we know a lot about the meal itself thanks to all the documents and images that can be found amongst the newspapers, it remains a little of perplexity on the exact location of this improvised restaurant compartment, that is, it was inside of the mould that served as a model to the original or inside the original itself exposed at the Crystal Palace.

For sure we do know that the menu consisted of eight courses and what exactly they were is confirmed by the preserved copies of the BILL OF FARE:

- picture 5 - Bill of Fare

Soups: Mock Turtle, Julien, Hare

Fish: Cod and Oyster Sauce, Fillets of Whiting, Turbot à l’Hollandaise

Removes: Roast Turkey, Ham, Raised Pigeon Pie, Boiled Chicken and Celery Sauce

Entrées: Cotolettes de Moutonaux Tomates, Currie de Lapereaux au riz, Salmi de Perdrix, Mayonnaise de filets de Sole

Game: Pheasants, Woodcocks, Snipes

Sweets: Macedoine Jelly, Orange Jelly, Bavaroise, Charlotte Russe, French Pastry, Nougat à la Chantilly, Buisson de Meringue aux [Confiture ?]

Dessert: Grapes, Apples, Pears, Almonds and Raisins, French Plums, Pines, Filberts, Walnuts &c, &c

Wines: Sherry, Madeira, Port, Moselle, Claret

If we are to believe the news that the press gives us, we also know that the dinner became rowdy and boisterous, since the effect of the wines that put quite soon the defendants in high spirits causing them to sing loudly.

In the picture below you can see the design that the same Mr. Waterhouse Hawkins did to commemorate the event

- picture 6 - The Dinner in the Mould of the Iguanodon by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins, Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University.

which accompanied a brief chronicle of the evening written in his own hand:

THE DINNER IN THE MOULD OF THE IGUANODON

Given by Mr. B Waterhouse Hawkins

To Prof R Owen, Prof Edward Forbes, Mr Joseph Prestwich and 18 other Scientific and literary gentlemen at the Crystal Palace, Sydenham on the 31st of December 1853

The Restoration of the lguanodon was one of the largest and earliest completed of Mr Waterhouse Hawkins’ gigantic models measuring thirty feet from the nose to the end of the tail, of that quantity the body with the neck contained about fifteen feet which when the pieces of the mould that formed the ridge of the back were removed the body presented the appearance of a wide open Boot with on enclosed arch seven feet high at both ends. The arch in the head of the animal was occupied by Prof R Owen the celebrated Palaeontologist who with Prof Edward Forbes liberally aided Mr Waterhouse Hawkins with counsel and scientific criticism during the whole time occupied by his unique, arduous and successful undertaking. The wider arch at the opposite end was filled by Mr Francis Fuller the Managing Director of the Crystal Palace with Prof Edward Forbes on his right and a musical friend on his left whose delightful singing greatly increased the pleasure of a memorable evening. The two sides contain nine seats each that in centre of left was occupied by Mr Hawkins as host and Chairman, was supported on his right by Mr Joseph Prestwich one of his earliest pupils & constant friend during the previous twenty five years. Mr John Gould FRS was on his left.

And loudly, late in the evening, they took leave of the prehistoric world singing, along the way, a song created for the occasion of which I propose you the lyric:

A thousand ages underground,
His skeleton had lain,
But now his body's big and round,
And there's life in him again !
The jolly old beast is not deceased,
There's life in him again,
The jolly old beast is not deceased,
There's life in him again.

His bones like Adam's wrapped in clay,
His ribbs of iron stout,
Where is the brute alive today,
That dares to turn him out.
The jolly old beast is not deceased,
There's life in him again,
The jolly old beast is not deceased,
There's life in him again.

The time for the Good Wishes has arrived, since the old year is about to leave us, and in this occasion I offer you again a well-wishing quote that I posted already long ago, but I love it so much, and I seem it to be even more appropriate today than how it was then ...

If I could offer you, this morning, the most precious gift
It would be a time without beginning or end.
A life full of good health and that peace and inner joy
that can come only from the spirit.
It would be pureness in your thoughts and in your words
so anything you can approach could be nothing else than beauty.
It would be a deep sleep, and a breath of sweet serenity.
It would be understanding of the abyss
existing between the material
and the spiritual - so that anger and frustration
would dissolve into a warm refuge of Love.
And you'd be forever the most faithful of friends ...
not for me but for yourself.
All the fruits of life sprout in the heart
so this is my gift
from my heart to yours.
