PORTRAIT OF A LADY ~ Laura Ingalls Gunn, the privilege of being a descendant of Laura Ingalls Wilder.

I knew her for chance ...

The Ingalls Family

thanks to Stacey, blogger at POOFING THE PILLOWS, who, as soon as read my post about Laura Ingalls Wilder's biography, put me in contact with her: Laura Ingalls Gunn is a descendant of the all over the world known and loved little Laura, protagonist of the series "The Little House on the Prairie" and writer, as an adult, of so many books for children telling her adventures, dating back to when she was a child and pertinent her life as a woman, mother and wife.

Laura Ingalls Gunn is a blogger herself at DECORE TO ADORE, a so beautiful blog about home decoration, she's a lady fond of romantic details and settings, of such a good nature, a tender hearted 'gal' as few we may know.
Here today I want to introduce her to you, I want to let you know not only the blogger, who's so very talented, but firstly the first cousin three times removed of Laura Ingalls Wilder ( Charles Ingalls was her great-great granduncle ) and I love to do it through her words, for I'm sure that, after having read them, she'll win your heart and you'll be eventually fond of her !

Laura Ingalls Wilder, 1918

- What kind of relationship is linking you with Laura and when you came to know it

My great-great grandfather, Lansford “James” Ingalls and Charles (Laura’s father) were brothers.*
My great aunt, Mildred Ingalls Kenner, sister of my grandfather, Roy Andrew Ingalls, was a librarian and also our family historian. Each birthday and Christmas for several years, when I was a small child, she gifted me one of the “Little House” books until I had the complete collection.
My maternal grandmother, Mary Bradley Varner, loved to study genealogy and mapped out my complete family history. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t know about my relationship to Laura. She has always been a part of my family.

- When did you visit her homes and who accompanied you ( did you visit them all, what did you felt finding yourself exactly where she lived her ordinary days, and so on ... )

I visited her first home, Little House in the Big Woods, in Pepin, Wisconsin when I was 12 years old. I was taken there by my grandfather, Roy, and his sister, my great aunt, Dorothy Ingalls Farrell. I remember being very upset because there was no longer a forest (big woods) surrounding the cabin.

My daughter and I moved from California to New York, (I was 25 and she was 5 years old) and we drove the entire way. We stopped in De Smet, South Dakota. There are several sites in this small town which Laura wrote about in the books “By the Shores of Silver Lake”, “The Long Winter”, “Little Town on the Prairie”, “These Happy Golden Years” and “The First Four Years”. The town and home site truly is a “must see” for any Laura fan.

While living in upstate New York my daughter and I drove to Malone, New York to visit the childhood homestead of Laura’s husband, Almanzo, which was documented in “Farmer Boy”. It was a lovely home, fully restored to its original state.

A year later we moved to Texas. While living there my daughter, now age 6, and I drove to Independence, Kansas which has a replica of the log cabin Laura lived in and wrote about in “Little House in the Prairie”.
On that same trip we also went to Mansfield, Missouri. This has a few sites to visit including the Rock House which was a gift from Rose and where Laura wrote many of the Little House books. There is also the House at Rocky Ridge that Almanzo built for Laura. As she was only 4’11” tall (2.54 cm) her kitchen almost felt like a dollhouse kitchen as it was customized for her height.

A few years later, on a visit to Minnesota to see my paternal grandmother, Eleanor Becker Ingalls, (Grandma Jingles) my husband, two children and I drove down to Walnut Grove, Minnesota. It too has several wonderful sites to see and it was lovely to enjoy a picnic “On the Banks of Plum Creek”.

There is just one site that I have not been to which is the hotel in Burr Oak, Iowa. The Ingalls family lived here for one year when Laura was about 9 or 10 years of age. She never wrote about it because it was a very dark period for the family.

- What does it mean to you to have such inheritance in values

It is so nice to have such a detailed family history. Laura is a wonderful role model on how to persevere and keep a cheerful outlook even during difficult times. Her faith in God has also been a wonderful inspiration to me.

- How do you feel when you hear people talking of her or read something about her

Having the same name I often will be shopping and someone will need to see my identification card or ask my name when I am purchasing something. People often get very excited when they see/hear it. I have never once encountered anyone who didn’t have the warmest or loveliest reaction regarding their thoughts about Laura. So many people love her books as well as the television show. It is always a nice thing to hear.

- Have you read all the biographies about her … and her books

There are so many books now that have been written about Laura/the Ingalls family that I imagine I have not read all of them, but I have read a good many. Whenever I visit a foreign country I try to visit a bookstore and purchase one of her books. So far I have copies of “Little House on the Prairie” written in Spanish, French, German and Greek.

- Would you have liked to know her and to live at her age

It would be very nice to have a time machine and be able to travel back in time and visit with Laura and learn first-hand about my family. I imagine that she was a very nice person, full of intelligence and wit. One must remember though that Laura chose not to write about some of the very difficult and dark times of her life. Like everyone else the family had their share of heartache. The death of her baby brother, Mary’s blindness and other events could have been prevented in the age of modern medicine and antibiotics. For this reason I don’t know if I would want to live during that time. But I truly appreciate the pioneering spirit of my family. Still, I think many romantics at heart, myself included, perhaps long for a simpler, sweeter time.

For sure I'm one of them, darling friend of mine, and how excited I am to discover that History and people who has marked it are still living today in such wonderful persons like You !

In the hope to have caught your interest and enthralled you with such a loving Lady and her interesting inheritance, I'm sending my warmest hug to you all, dearest readers and friends, may love always have a place in your days, that's my very wish for you

see you soon 💕

Ci sono diversi luoghi in questa piccola città che Laura ha nominato nei libri “By the Shores of Silver Lake”, “The Long Winter”, “Little Town on the Prairie”, “These Happy Golden Years” e “The First Four Years”.

Little House in the Prairie”.

Finora ho copie di “Little House on the Prairie” -"La casa nella prateria" scritte in spagnolo, francese, tedesco e greco.

A presto 💕

  3. Hello, Dear Dany, I so enjoyed reading your interview with Laura Ingalls Gunn! She sounds like the perfect person to keep Laura Ingalls Wilder's legacy alive. The 'Little House' Books are treasured by my family - I read all the books to my 4 children when they were young, and the television series was also broadcasting at that time. I still have the complete set to read to my Grandchildren soon. Such a beloved writer and family, and I would not be surprised to know that she lived through some dark times, as many did during that era. Thank you for sharing this, my dear and I hope that you have a wonderful week with sweet things. Hugs xo Karen

As a child, we grew up reading the "Little House" books, and what a delight and joy they always were to read, Laura had such a unique and special way of telling a story. I did not know that she was only 4'11", now I don't feel so short, as I am only a few inches taller than here, lol! I did not know about the dark period in Iowa with their little family, and of course the death of the little baby brother must have been so hard for them. Indeed, we are blessed today with modern medicine preventing so many illnesses from being fatal. I truly enjoyed this lovely post, and want to now stop by and visit her blog! 25. Dear Dany, I so enjoyed reading your interview with Laura. I've read her blog and have read all the Little House books, so this was a treat. One little thing I must point out though, if another genealogist has not already done so: she is not a fourth cousin of Laura Ingalls Wilder; rather, she is a first cousin three times removed. She would be a fourth cousin of a great grandchild of Laura Ingalls Wilder. This is a common misunderstanding. Thank you so much for this delightful interview!
